Walter & Group...
Jerry Puckett sent us his latest poem..... this one dear to my heart because it is where I live and do so much of my fishing. I couldn't resist sharing it as an attachment.
A bit more about Florida in the second attachment. Gordy

From Liam Duffy :
Hi
Gordy,
Talking about practice targets, Several other Masters and myself used frizbee's
as targets which we found to be (a) CHEAP!, (b) do not blow around, (c) stack
conveniently (little space needed) can be purchased almost anywhere, can be
painted if necessary. The one's I use are flourescent orange which
helps the student, especially when thrown around in different locations the
students eye can pick up the colour when teaching changes of direction casts,
this helps the student to learn how to spot rises "out of the corner of his
eye".
I sometimes use up to 12 "frizbee" targets arranged at points similar to
a horizontal clockface and then tell the student "fish at 4 o'clock" etc., I
know these methods are for advanced students but they help conquer "tunnel
vision" when fishing. Hopefully this will be of interest to others for what its
worth.
Best Regards,
Liam Duffy

Liam... As you know, I like the idea of placing targets at selected distances but in different directions. One has to do that for teaching change of direction accuracy casting as you note.
Being a salty flats fisher, you piqued me with what I consider an important thing for giving directions when guiding friends on my skiff..... Often when I spotted and called a fish at 9 O'clock, my angler turned the wrong way and looked out at 3 O'clock. Could it be because people have so many digital watches ????
There's something about that 180 degree brain spark ! Now I do it differently. I say,
"TO YOUR LEFT ..... FISH AT 9 O'CLOCK."
Then we have the problem of distance judgement. So many guides will say, " FISH AT 50 FEET ". Works most of the time, but not always because the judgement of 50' to an some anglers will be anywhere from 20' to 100'.
I find it best to say : " FISH ONE CAST AWAY " or " TEN CASTS AWAY ". If the fish is really close, then I'll say, "FISH HALF A CAST AWAY". ...... or if really, really close, "HE'S RIGHT UNDER YOU ! "
When fishing with very knowledgable buddies, sometimes we'll call attention to a fish way the heck out there by saying,
"FISH.... TWO RAJEFF'S AWAY" !
Often I'll give the direction of travel of the fish as well, though at the spur of the moment I lke to keep it as simple as I can using no more instruction than necessary.
I've fished on one guide's boat where he'd painted a big number 3 on the starboard deck and a big number 9 on the port deck.
Perhaps some of you professional salty guides have your own methods of doing this... ?????????
