    Walter & Group...

    From Lou Bruno:

    Gordy,

I watched the videos; if you do not slide load then the caster is loading the rod gradually while accelerating during the forward cast. If you slide load then the rod is loaded less gradually. The amount of resistance that would load the rod is the same isn't it? If the length of fly line does not change, then the mass is constant, the resistance created by the fly line does not change, so the load would be the same whether you slide load or not?

    Lou...

I suspect the work performed and the load would be the same, just distributed differently over time.  One would have to devise a method of actually measuring this, though I doubt anyone has done this or will do it.

    Hi Gordy,
I would also recommend the site where Guy Manning is reffering to " http://flyfishingresearch.net/home.html "
About a year ago I made a small wrap up as a part of a lecture at a local flyfishingclub. I captured just the basics so every one could understand how to use sink tips.See attachment.

If I go out (sight-) nymphing for grayling with small weighted flies I never use tapered leaders. They just slow down the sinking. I use one piece of mono (eg 5x or 6x) straight away. The weighted fly will turn over the leader. Also for stillwater flyfishing especially when nymphing we use sometimes long leaders (20 foot) which are hardly or not tapered. But we use 3 unweighted flies. A fly tied on a heavy wire hook on the point. A fly on a medium wire hook or a smaller fly in the middle and a fly on a light wired hook or even smaller fly on the top. The weight of the flies (hook wire)spread along the leader will do the turnover.
    Regards,
