  • Paul Arden on the haul

    Walter & Group........

I'm back.  Hope you all had a great Thanksgiving .

Below, is an interesting letter from Paul Arden who addresses the idea of continuing the haul past counterflex, "to full rebound."

    Hi Gordy,
My lift hasn't arrived! Not yet. Soon and no doubt it will be some sort of death drive!
This year I'm doing something different and am in Hungary of all places. Very interesting fishing location. 400 flyfishers. 350,000 anglers. 10 million people. Seems to be out of balance, but under Communism hardly anyone flyfished - because flyfishers are all Capitalists!!! Anyway, it's changing now because they're working out that flyfishing is more fun. Average age of flyfishers here is around 30 I think.

Not many trout or grayling, but they fish for Chub(!), Pike, Asp and Zander. Asp are amazing! Potentially some of the best fishing in Europe. They fight somewhere between a brown and a rainbow trout. In fact they're so exciting I'm going to spend more time getting to know them.. but I need to find a flats' boat for Balaton next summer - going to be hard here in Europe where there aren't any flats boats!
    Some good pictures here: http://www.sexyloops.co.uk/cgi-bin/theboard_07/ikonboard.cgi?act=ST;f=1;t=6949;st=0

And of course Hungary is central to some excellent fishing, especially neighbours Croatia, Bosnia, Slovenia and Austria - all of which I've been to this summer. And each one is as different from the other as you could expect.

Apart from that, casting well and seem to have found consistency in the 5 and 7 weight distance. Throwing very much like Rick Hartman - seems to be the way forward but anyway who's cast with him knows this.

Our discussion board is amazing, you should drop in sometime - I think you'd love it and find it very interesting. We finally seem to be getting to the point where if we don't understand casting then we at least know the bits we don't understand. Lots of engineers on board as well as a bunch of people you know well. I'll start a topic tonight on hauling past RSP tonight to full rebound since it's something that obviously happens with many casters, myself included, it's something we've discussed but no conclusions. Like you I can't think of any advantage - but it happens. I would like to see Grunde's casting from the hauling side - I must go visit him next summer.
Overhang is interesting, I think you need to be very accurate in carrying the amount of overhang that pulls down below the SLP leaving the head on the SLP. With the ED5 for example this means carrying 86ft of line (carry in this case being line hand to line end). I don't know if there is an advantage in carrying more.

    Gotta go! Capitalists fishing awaits!
    Have a great Thanksgiving!
    Cheers, Paul

    Paul....

I'll theorize that if you continue the haul to rebound you won't have much if any real problem.  To carry the haul all the way through rebound, may well prove to be counterproductive.  I'll be interested in what you find out.

It will also be interesting to see what Bruce Richards comes up with a he and Noel Perkins refine and put to use their new haul analyzer.
