Good answers. For some other uses of the haul, check out Jim Valle's answers, too.

Gordy - Time to flex the brain muscles associated with casting and
take a stab at one of your quizzes:

A haul has 3 primary uses that I can think of -

    - increase line speed
    - increase rod load (not necessarily the same as increasing the
line speed because we could be talking about a water haul)
    - allow the line hand to contribute to the cast to inject extra
speed or power into the cast or to reduce fatigue in the casting
      arm

which brings us to the secondary uses and accomplishments of using a
    haul:

    - increase casting distance - partly through the increase of line
speed and rod load but also because the caster is able to carry
more line in the air during the false casts and is able to do it
with tighter loops. The tighter loops are possible when the caster
is carrying the maximum amount of line they are capable of because
they don't "run out of arm" which allows for additional rod loading
during the portion of the cast when the rod tip is moving in a
      straight line.
    - improve the ability to cast heavy lines and/or heavy fly patterns
    - counteract the affect of wind on the cast - this is relevant
regardless of the direction the wind is blowing from relative to
      the cast direction
    - increases the ability to shoot line for two reasons - one is the
increased speed of the line the other is that the line hand is
well positioned to form an o-ring for controlled shooting

Hope things are well with you Gordy. We're in the middle of another
cold spell here. I'm able to practice about 15 minutes or so before
the finger tips get too cold to continue. The affect of the cold
temperatures on the line is also quite noticeable.

    Cheers

    Walter

In line with some of our recent messages, I have a one question quiz for you:

QUESTION : List the uses and accomplishments of a haul.  (Off the top of my head, I can think of 5.)
