To put it in different words, The haul can:
1.) Increase line (loop) speed directly.
2.) Increase rod load.
3.) Smooth out the cast by taking up unwanted slack.
4.) Reduce the work done by the rod arm.
5.) Reduce the needed stroke length and rod arc.
6.) Assists efficiency of line pickup as with tension casts (water hauls).
7.) Helps diminish the number of false casts.
Lefty has pointed out that the haul can also, "Help bad casters throw their mistakes farther.". This is a good point.....and is one reason not to teach the haul until a good basic stroke is mastered. The poor caster does this by using the haul to reduce some of his slack found in large loops and waves in the line as well as that hanging from the rod tip as he starts his pick-up from a rod-tip-high position, etc.

- cast with less effort (any cast, any direction)
- more line control
- shortens required stroke length
- wind
- increase distance
- line pick up (pick up more line quicker with more speed)
- less false casting required
- adds load to the rod
- aerialize more line
- remove slack
