    Hi Gordy,

    1.  Trajectory will change with each distance. The amount of line out of the rod tip will icrease and thus a change in stroke length and a longer pause with increased line out of the rod tip.

YES.  THE 3 THINGS I WAS THINK OF ARE:-

    1.) CHANGE OF TRAJECTORY

2.) CHANGE OF ROD LOAD ( TIP CASTING FOR CLOSE TARGET, MID LOAD FOR MEDIUM DISTANCE, AND DEEPER LOAD INTO THE BUTT SECTION FOR THE MOST DISTANT TARGETS.

3.) CHANGE FROM EYE-TARGET LINE LINING UP WITH HAND-TARGET LINE FOR CLOSE TARGET, TO INTERSECTION OF THE MORE DIVERGENT LINES FOR DISTANCE TARGETS. (CHECK OUT JOAN WULFF'S BOOK ON ACCURACY CASTING FOR THIS ONE.)

    2.  Line hand side with increased wind.  Angle the rod tip more to the side could be done(side arm cast-but it is harder to be accuratae) to avoid the fly or change to a more vertical cast with increased speed to avoid the fly and counter the fly being blown to the side.

YES....THIS IS ONE WAY TO DO IT.  WHAT I WAS GETTING AT, HOWEVER, IS THAT WITH NO WIND YOU CAN HOVER YOUR FLY WHEREAS WITH WIND, YOU MIGHT CONSIDER DRILLING YOUR FLY INTO THE TARGET SO THE WIND DOESN'T AFFECT IT AS MUCH.
    3. Compensate for the wind by directing the fly more to the right, haul a bit more sharply to increase speed and maintin loop size for an accurate cast.

YES. ALSO, YOU NEED GREATER TIP TRAVEL, SO YOU HAVE TO INCREASE YOUR STROKE LENGTH AND CASTING ARC TO ACHIEVE THAT. ONE WAY OF DOING THIS IS TO CROUCH AND CAST WITH YOUR ROD OVERHEAD RATHER THAN GOING, "CROSS BODY" OR SIMPLY RAISING YOUR CASTING ARM ELBOW TO PLACE YOUR ROD TIP OVER THE OPPOSITE SHOULDER.
    4. It would be hard to be accurate and watch each back cast.  I would not watch my backcast preceeding my presentation cast.

YES.  DON'T WATCH YOUR BACK CAST WHEN ACCURACY CASTING .

    5. This would be similar to a "quick cast" and would call for a roll cast to begin or a back cast to pull the fly out of your hand.  I think the roll cast is preferable as you only have to make a max of two back casts.  The more casts the more likely an error is going to occur.

THIS ALSO MEANS THAT YOU CAN'T, "CHEAT" BY HAVING THE FLY OUT NEAR THE TARGET BEFORE LIFTING AND CASTING.  THAT TRICK ALLOWS YOU TO DETERMINE YOUR DISTANCE WITH EASE....BUT YOUR EXAMINER WON'T ALLOW THAT.

    6. Having been asked to do this I can say that it takes practice to retrieve line while false casting.   On each back cast line is brought in until the desired length is reached.  With practice it can be done on both the forward and back casts but line control is a MUST. The line hand and the rod hand finger really get a work out.
    Jim

I AGREE, JIM.  THIS TAKES A LOT OF PRACTICE.

    Subject: MCI QUESTION: TARGET CASTING.

    Hi, Group....

You are casting to targets at 15', 40' and 60' from you.

1.) Name three things that you would consider changing as you go from one target to another, starting with the 15' one ?

2.) What would you change (if anything) from casting to these targets with no wind at all, to casting to them with a 12 MPH wind from your line hand side ?

3.) You now need to cast over the opposite shoulder to these targets. There is a 12 MPH wind from your casting arm side. What might you do differently as you go from the 40' target to the 60' target ?

4.) If you were casting to targets on your MCI exam, would you watch each back cast ?

5.) Your examiner is strict.  He/she asks you to start each target cast WITH THE FLY IN YOUR HAND.  What additional difficulty might this pose ?

6.) This examiner now wants you to place your fly on the most distant target, pick it up, and without touching it to the ground or water, place it on a target 20' from you.  How do you do that ?
