  • RE: MCI QUESTION: TARGET CASTING.

    Jim...

Good answers.....and a sprinkle of fun, to boot.

I'd comment that stance, while a matter of style, is a good thing to consider, as you point out.

Also, I teach candidates to turn the brimmed hat around for that close target cast so that the rod can come right up to the center of the forehead.  That, however, is style, too......as such, it's a suggestion....not mandated.

One reason for question # 6 is that this allows the candidate to demonstrate really good control of a difficult task.  It's something that once in a while does come up when fishing......but not often.

    Hi Gordy and Group,

    Great MCI Questions!!

You are casting to targets at 15', 40' and 60' from you.

1.) Name three things that you would consider changing as you go from one target to another, starting with the 15' one ?

Stance: Feet together ? square to target for short casts, step back casting side foot for longer distances a function of ?stroke length?

Line plane or Trajectory ? close targets down in front etc, increase trajectory as required for target distance

Rod position short targets turn hat brim around and tip cast from your forehead , as distance increases move to normal vertical position to achieve the required stroke length this will introduce a ?sighting triangle, parallax? which must be accounted for tin the cast.

2.) What would you change (if anything) from casting to these targets with no wind at all, to casting to them with a 12 MPH wind from your line hand side ?

Compensate for the windage, increase line speed, possibly cast on the downwind side

3.) You now need to cast over the opposite shoulder to these targets. There is a 12 MPH wind from your casting arm side. What might you do differently as you go from the 40' target to the 60' target ?

Move your opposite side foot to the rear to increase stroke length, and/or haul, and/or shoot line to target

4.) If you were casting to targets on your MCI exam, would you watch each back cast ?

Not during accuracy testing, too much unnecessary motion which will affect overall accuracy and focus, Other portions especially distance Absolutely.

Caution: While practicing for the MCI or CI?. Looking directly at your Backcast has been known to cause severe Nausea, until perfected!!!

HIGHLY RECOMMEND Solving this problem prior to testing!!! If you make your examiner vomit it probably won?t go well!

5.) Your examiner is strict.  He/she asks you to start each target cast WITH THE FLY IN YOUR HAND.  What additional difficulty might this pose ?

You mean this is not standard testing procedure for everyone??? ? Just kidding.

This is cool and just part of the fun of the challenge Don?t strip in all the line with a 7.5? leader and a 9? rod. Hold the fly and leave a loop of line out of the tip, take your time and shoot line out as needed without over shooting. The hardest part of this is probably getting a hold of the fly after each cast.

6.) This examiner now wants you to place your fly on the most distant target, pick it up, and without touching it to the ground or water, place it on a target 20' from you.  How do you do that ?

This technique is an excerpt from the monkey and the football manual. Really not a problem once you practice it, but be ready for this. I found it was easier to strip line in on the forward cast only, for some unknown reason , others may  be able to do both, just keep your focus on the targets  the hardest part is transferring the line to under your rod hand finger which eliminates your haul when you have a fair amount of line out there, Everyone needs to figure this out for him/her self, this is a kind of  ?Style?

Hope everyone appreciates a little bit of humor, this is supposed to be fun too!!
