Good trick.
Here's mine for bonefish, albies, tuna......and other fish which rip line out at blinding speed.:-
At the strike, I use the Lefty Kreh technique of having the line pay out through my, "first stripper guide" made by a circle formed from my line hand thumb and index finger.
My addition, is that I immediately place that hand DIRECTLY OVER THE PILE OF LINE ON THE DECK.. That really is a neat way to pretty well prevent a tangle which will pop any tippet in less than a heart beat.

Howdy Gordy and Gang.Here at the Ranch my Casting Venue is Dry grass and gravel. [We really need rain].So to help my distance casting I have a plastic sheet on the ground this is the heavy plastic that is used under office furniture. One side is smooth. BUT the other has little spikes that stop it from sliding on the carpet. I use this side up to stop the Texas breezes from blowing my line all over. I will say you do not want to walk bear foot on it.Second my slack is stacked last on the bottom first on the top in lazy coils on my line hand side to in front of me.I leave enough slack so that my stroke will not pull the line from the bottom of the pile this is placed on my rod side. I am sure I could have said that better.From the rod, on my rod side, is about 10-12 ft of line. Then the coils from the ROD in open loops laid flat from in front of me to beside me.Staging the line is as important on the practice field as on the boat or walking the shore. This slack must be under control at all times. As you know a bonefish or Tarpon can rip off the line in a hurry. I have been told the bone can take it at 22 ft per second! Taking on any large fish or even a trout on a light tippet the last thing you need is a wad of line in your stripper guide.Many a good cast as ended this same way.So setting up for a long cast or just fishing "keeping control of the slack is mandatory".As to stepping up or back that is a personal style. Some lay the slack between their legs others want it on the rod side.If you watch the line come up off the ground out of a basket, or from behind you, you know that it is moving at a very high speed. This speed is Kinetic Energy. This moving mass does not really change directions. Giving it a clean path to your stripping guide or line hand fingers is just conservation of energy.ol Al
