    Walter & Group...

    From Bob Rumpf:

    Hi Gordy & group,

David asks if the difference in line tapers is noticeable to advanced casters. If and when they forget themselves and try to cast a long (12 - 15') leader with a delicate convex tapered line, they are quickly reminded this creates a monster to cast due to energy dissipation.

    Regards,

    Bob Rumpf

    >From Dusty Sprague:

Ally's illustration describes the rod tip path I see in many students who have problems with tailing loops….they start too slowly (convex tip path) then apply power abruptly trying to make the cast (concave tip path)….

[GH]  Check the sketch in the attachment.  This was taken from Mel Krieger's book. It was the third of a series of three drawings, depicting a tailing loop.

THE ESSENCE OF FLY CASTING, by Mel Krieger, 1987, p.14.

Paul Arden commented on this drawing :

Hi Gordy, the third loop isn't a tailing loop. I know we used to think it was.

    Cheers, Paul

[GH]  Years ago, when taking my Master's exam, my examiners asked me to draw a tailing loop.  I did so, just like it was drawn in Mel's text.  The examiners agreed.

Until recently, I accepted similar drawings done by candidates who were asked to draw tailing loops.

Now we know that this is not only a gross simplification, but not really the way a tailing loop is formed.

LET'S SEE HOW SOME OF YOU WOULD DRAW THE TAILING LOOP :

    1.  A TENDENCY TO TAIL (AN "ALMOST" TAIL).

    2.  A COMPLETED TAILING LOOP.

    3.  Can you come up with a definition for a TAILING LOOP?

    4.  Are all tailing loops the same?

    5.  Are tailing loops ever done intentionally?

    6.  If your answer to 5. was "yes", tell us for what fishing purpose.

    7.  Which leg of the loop altered when casting with a concave rod tip path?

    8.  How do you think that loop leg is altered?

    Gordy
