[GH] Before we reject Mel Krieger's sketch of a tailing loop, let's consider this: *
Compare Mel's drawing to the photo in the attachment of Lefty Kreh casting a tailing loop : **
Now, let me play the part of the "devil's advocate" as I use my imagination to carry Lefty's tailing loop to completion. When I do that, I find it conceivable that this loop could well continue forward and, as it unrolls, the crossover of the wave in the fly leg as the loop unrolls might well occur late enough that it could look very much like Mel's loop !
Admittedly, this would be more likely to occur if the tail was farther out, as in one of Aitor Coteron's videos which I sent, yesterday.
As we look at Mel's drawing, it's easy to think that the fly at the end is traveling downward, when it could actually be traveling in an upward direction just prior to collision with the rod leg. With a simple drawing, there is no way to tell.
On the other hand, if Mel's top sketch precedes the lower one, that would suggest that the fly end is descending toward the rod leg. While that may be possible, I'm not aware of it. I'm here to learn, however, so perhaps someone can send a video of that actually happening.
What say ye ??????

[GH] Robert Garber gave this answer:
"4. Are tailing loops ever done intentionally?
Yes, in demonstrations. I can’t think of a reason to do one when fishing."
I sometimes use an out-of-plane tailing loop to flip a fly beneath an overhang, or to wake up a largemouth bass beneath lilly pads. I do it with a burst of force sufficient to make the rod tip dip and return after starting my side arm forward cast in a slightly different rod plane than my prior back cast. Doing it side arm allows gravity to help prevent an actual collision.
Jason Borger described a similar cast credit for which he gave to Michael Maloney. *
Quoting Jason: " You can actually use tailing loops. Friend and renowned instructor Michel Maloney spent some time talking with me one day about employing purposefully created and accurately aimed tails to swing a heavy fly up under mangrove cover on the flats. Definitely a Maloney technique."

>From Paul Arden:
Hi Gordy,
10-15 years ago we all used to draw tailing loops as crossed loops. Now we know what they look like (transverse waves), how they are caused and how they propagate. I certainly had it wrong on Sexyloops (same drawings as Mel's). It was Mac Lord who put me on to it - I can't remember when, but a long time ago. Aitor and Alejandro have really pushed our understanding forward.
We haven't always been right about everything and I'm sure we're not now either. High speed video coupled with engineers help fix our misunderstandings.
Cheers, Paul

[GH] Paul,
I, too, saw it differently than I do, now. That's how we learn over the years.
Aitor Coteron's videos and others by Bernd Ziesche and Alejandro Vinuales have gone a long way to show us what really happens.
Several years ago, Tom White took videos of tailing loops which I cast in various ways. In each one we could see that distinct traveling wave in the fly leg prior to collision. After Tom died, I was unable to find those when Tom's daughter and I went through his material.

[GH] Here is an overlay of two casts, one of which results in a tailing loop. From Jason Borger. Note the last statement in the caption which says, (2) Note that the tailing line must climb significantly upwards in order to unroll" *
