  • The actual exam used as a "Pre-Test"

[GH]  From Dusty Sprague on an unprepared candidate using the actual MCI exam as a "pre-test" I highlighted his last sentence :

I'd much rather work with a candidate to help prepare them than test the knowingly unprepared candidate just to let them know what is expected.

We examiners make not only a physical contribution to a test but an emotional one as well.  We get ready…ready for the good and the bad and the possibility we are going to tell someone its a failure.  That takes a bit of a toll on examiners.  Some drop out of the program because they can't stand to fail people or tell people….you failed….just too taxing.

So, dear candidate….don't put me through that unless you are really sincerely ready for the test.

    [GH]  Dusty,

Well said !  I join you in putting a great deal of preparation including a strong emotional component into hosting an exam.  To say the least, I take this very seriously.   At the same time I do my best to make the experience as light and stress free as I can for my candidate.

At some venues such as conclaves, more than an occasional candidate who wishes to test and has worked hard to be ready doesn't get tested because there are not enough testing teams available.  To have a totally unprepared candidate take up one of these spots would be a shame.

    [GH] From Rene Hesse :

    Hi Gordy,

You were looking for replies mainly from BOG's and Masters on this subject, but I have to make sure
people remember the 'open' nature of the testing is an invitation (on the CI level) in to the community.

Here is why I say that.  One Friday several years ago I found the FFF web site. It said there would be a
CI test at the Atlanta Fly Fishing Club on Saturday.  I had no idea what it was about, but I thought I'd give it a try. After passing the written test we went to the field and I failed as you can imagine, but Peter Lami didn't
make me feel like I failed, he said I had potential.  He didn't shut down the test, so I was able to see the scope
of what it was about.  If someone had said I couldn't test that day my life would be completely different.
Amazing how just giving someone a chance can change their life.

It was a by chance meeting with Peter the next day and then working together for a few months after that that I really got the idea of what teaching/ mentoring was all about.  It was a gift to me that he shared, and now I can do the same for others---isn't that how life is supposed to be?

In conclusion,  I do feel anyone should be able to take the CI test.  I also feel like an un coached person
should be 'taught' through the test at the point of failing. No instructor wants to 'waist time',  so don't make it a waste of time--do something constructive with it.

On the master level ---that's another thing.  The candidate should be qualified according to the
Casting Committees guide lines before being allowed to test.

    Kind Regards,
    Rene Hesse CCI

[GH] John Till comments on my note from The PRE-TEST 8 :

I concur—once the time is set aside and the person is prepared and made a real effort, work with the person.  John

[GH]  John also comments on Michael Jones' message from The PRE-TEST 6 :

I agree with Michael.  At GGACC, we give free clinics and we basically have people go through the casts and each member of the group will provide a critique.  We do not go over the actual test questions; the only materials which we go over are the materials found on the web.  Sincerely, John

[GH]  Michael Jones sends these questions.:

    Gordy~  With your blessings:

Five simple short answer questions for the group:  Your answers are based on your impressions as a MCI exam candidate.

    1.  Are any 2 MCI oral exams ever the same?

    2.  Does that favor the candidate?

    3.  Does that favor the examiner?

    4.  Would you (personally) favor a comprehensive written exam for the MCI test over an oral exam (followed by the practical casting component as it stands)?

    5.  How would that change the exam for you (personally)?
