    Walter & Group...

Last message before I leave town :

    From Al Crise:

    Howdy Casters

Here is Wednesday?s a week late. I had to spend the weekend in ICU, Last week?s Chemo kicked my butt, I was coughing blood, blood pressure very low and just about a wiped as I can get. Getting back my strength and able to sit up and type. WE will just pick up as if nothing happened.

This is a very important Task. The Roll cast is the most used and abused cast there is. I started correcting some of these comments but instead I will wait until Friday.

I am still trying to make the Conclave in Mountain Home AR First weekend in October I have a class on Thursday Morning CCI Get Ready, IF you are a CCI or Master stop by and lend a hand. I will need it. If you have done on of my classes before I would sure use your help.

    Ol Al

This question from Liam Duffy :

    Hi Gordy,
I have been reading Al's definitions and agree entirely, now a question what's the difference between a "roll cast" and a "deadline roll cast" ? also whats the difference between a "forward spey" and a "switch cast"
    Regards,
    Liam Duffy

    Liam....

The latest thinking is that the dead line roll cast is just that.  A roll cast during which the D-loop is static .... not moving until the forward stroke begins.

For testing purposes, that is the way the standard roll casts are expected to be done, as I understand it.

The THCI and MCCI Committees obviously have taken the position that the switch cast is the same as the forward Spey with lift, and formation of a forward anchor point.

That leaves one horse of a different color to consider:   The roll cast which does not have a lift and dynamic anchor placement but starts with the anchor as fly, leader, and a small length of line out on the water or grass in front of the caster.  The "back cast" is made with a dynamic back cast (line not static; rather in motion ) above the ground or water followed smoothly by a forward stroke.

I don't know of any special name given to that one except to note that most casters and instructors have been using the term "switch cast" for it for years.  I have been among them, though I do see that the terms put forth by the Committees may be better.

One consideration would be to go back and call this "horse" a SWITCH CAST and then define the one with lift and a dynamic anchor placement as a FORWARD SPEY.  That way, we'd have two different casts with different easily understood names.

Since the Committees have already made their points, I'll go with them at present.

However, as Curley in "CITY SLICKERS" said, when asked by Billy Crystal if he'd killed anybody today,

                                                   "THE DAY AIN'T OVER !"
