    Walter & Group...

    Question from Don Pendleton:

    Gordy,
When I took my CCI there was a entire detailed list of casting requirements to be tested on.  The FFF website states that new casting
requirements for the Master's test will be availible in Jan. 2009.  I can't find those new casting/testing requirements any where on the FFF site.  I haven't even found old casting requirements for the Master's test.

    Can you help me out?

    Thanks,
    Don Pendleton

Don ...    It IS on the FFF website at: www.fedflyfishers.org   Click on Master Certification and then on the MCI Performance exam.

Just to be certain you have it, I downloaded it and have placed it as an attachment to this message.
Let me know if you have any trouble interpreting these tasks and I'll help all I can.

I also included a copy of the Master Candidate's Bill of Rights.

Hi Gordy, attached are pics of you, one  at your  computer other at the helm of your tarpon boat.  By PO mail I am  returning the white socks off your boat that you loaned me to prevent my lily white toes from burning off!  What a wonderful experience it was for me to spend that day with you, both in your office observing you building leaders and in your other office, experiencing the wonders of tarpon hunting in the keys.  Thanks again for your patience. Later in that same week with Don JAckson, I committed every possible casting error that a  newbie tarpon fisherman could  possibly do, and a few more that you have probably never seen! You should use me in a demo on what not to do! I just finished reading your Sunday e mail on tarpon dawn patrol feeding frenzy, that was exciting stuff!!, ..when are you going to write down and publish a tarpon book covering some of your tarpon experiences and observations?  Thanks again Gordy, Bob

    Bob....

Considering that this was your first time tarpon fishing, I think you did a great deal better than you thought you did.

With your experience of many years trout fishing, I'm certain that you could teach me many tricks as I fished with 8X tippets which I can't see without magnifier loupes and tiny flies for wary trout !

We all have our "niches" of expertise.  That is one of the wonderful things of our FFF as we introduce one another to venues and fishing experiences which we might otherwise never assume !

I'll probably never write the book.

    KEEP THE SOCKS !

Peter Hayes of Tasmania is one of the most interesting fly casting instructors I've ever met.  Last year, at Whitefish, I learned many things from him that I hadn't known .......including a refresingly different way of teaching the roll cast, a way of tying a 100% Pitkin knot in the dark, and an amazingly simple way of taking a wind knot out from a leader .... many others.  He is Australia's fly casting champ.

Peter will be at the Conclave at Loveland.  If you are there and make the effort to meet and listen to him, you can't help but learn stuff I guarantee you didn't know previously !

    This from him:

    Dear Gordy,

It is with pleasure that I announce my 2009 fly casting and fishing course dates. After a very busy and successful guiding season I am really looking forward to working with you on improving your casting and fishing skills.

I am excited about my new website www.peterhayesflyfishing.com and the easy way you can view all class dates and information. You can now book on line in a secure manner with your Visa or Mastercard. Course notes, frequently asked questions and venue details will be forwarded to you along with your confirmation.

Additionally, a focal point of the site will be my blog. This will be my much needed, and long awaited, portal for passing on tips and information to you that I think can make a great difference to your fly fishing.

It has never been easier for you to increase your fly casting and fly fishing skills.

Click here to view class dates and book your place.

As a result of my time at the Federation of Fly Fishers Conclave in Montana last season and the wonderful days spent casting, talking teaching and all things fishing with Lefty Kreh, Joan Wulff, Bruce Richards and Jerry Siem I know I am a much more complete teacher and I have much more to offer you.

Well, once again I am off to the FFF Conclave in Colorado. Instead of just participating in classes I have been asked to conduct some classes in both basic and advanced casting. I will be building on the relationships I forged last year and learning as much as I can about what is new in the world of fly casting and fly fishing.

I am so pleased to be able to take my 9 YO son Lachlan with me. Afterwards we will be fishing in Wyoming and Montana for a week. We will catch up with Jack Dennis, Jeff Currier and the legendary Montana guide Chuck Ravetta.

I really do hope you can come along to a class or two this winter, hear some first hand stories about these wonderful fly fishing icons and allow me to impart some of the diverse knowledge that I will gain.

My aim is to teach you to enjoy effortless controlled casting with a grace and accuracy you may never have thought possible.

My Australia wide casting classes are supported by extensive course notes, follow up lesson plans and exercises to help guarantee the learning outcomes we seek. After the classes you can call (03) 6397 5073 at any time with casting, tackle or fishing related questions. I want you to feel that I am more of an ongoing personal trainer to you rather than a once off teacher.

Oh, and one final note of importance. The past two Tasmanian Conclaves have been so successful that we are now offering ‘Live In Conclaves’ in both Melbourne (Oct) and Sydney (Sep). Come along for a weekend of both education and entertainment and celebrate the joys of fly fishing with my wonderful team of tutors that I call ‘THE BEST OF THE BEST’. Make sure you book early as spaces are limited and I know these events will be popular.

Remember, "Life’s too short... become a great fly caster".

    Peter

COMMENT:  Al and I have discussed the things which a fly fisherman should consider when planning a trip to fish from a flats skiff.  He has taken the time to make the outline which I've included as his attachment to this message.
