    Walter & Group...

    From Doug Swift:

    Gordy
You mentioned Lefty as one of the smoothest casters you know.   I am reading his new book and although I haven't finished it yet it seems to me that his description of casting a long  line with his elbow on the shelf style would be a good visual style of pure translation prior to rotation.  His use of body rotation, bringing the casting arm to that horizontal extended position and keeping his "elbow on the shelf" would all contribute to the translation phase prior to rotation.  Looking at the photos in the book help me understand the concept of translation and rotation a little better. Would this statement be accurate "elbow on the shelf"=translation    "speed up and stop=rotation - in relation to Lefty,s style?

    Doug...

It's not quite that simple .... though close.

That is also my own default style.  When using this low-elbow-off- horizontal casting plane style, keeping the elbow in line ("on the shelf") does make it much easier for me to use translation prior to activating rod arc.  By doing that, I can delay rotation easily.

With this style and Lefty's wording, the "SPEED-UP-AND-STOP" is accomplished with almost pure rotation.  During this phase of the cast, however, the elbow stays "on the shelf".  For that reason, I would not equate "elbow-on-the-shelf" strictly as a synonym for translation, whereas his "speed-up-and-stop" comes closer to being pure rotation.

The "speed-up-and-stop" is comparable to Joan Wulff's, "power-snap" and the "pop-stop" of others including Macaulay Lord.  All are performed with pure or almost pure rotation.

Of course, when using an elbow-forward-vertical casting plane style, one can delay rotation very well by starting with pure translation prior to instituting rod arc.

what is Mooching and how does a mooching reel differ?

Al...  Good question when following our voluminous discussions on CENTERPINNING.

Mooching differs from centerpinning in many ways including the fact that (as far as I know) it isn't used for presenting a fly whereas centerpinning is sometimes used to present a nymph.  One reason it isn't applicable to fly fishing is that it is a deep water technique and uses a heavy weight sometimes called a "bananna". It doesn't involve any casting.

For that reason, I'd think in not a good idea for the Group to spend much time on the subject.

I have included an attachment on Mooching.

    From Craig Buckbee :

    gordy,

if we continue to discuss center-pinning then i put forth that when we're done we discuss trolling.

i grew up fishing be it in a boat, on shore, or in the water, salt, fresh, you name it. there are many pictures of me holding fish while barely being able to stand. point being i wasn't fly fishing then, fly fishing came after learning the other methods... like i'm sure most here in the group. where center pinning is legal fine, let it happen. it is a fishing method, and to the extent that a master instructor should know OF many fishing methods, center pinning is NOT fly fishing.

to put it bluntly: it bores me.

    next.

    and thanks for the vent,

Craig...   Many feel the same way you do.  For that reason we won't dwell on non fly fishing subjects else we'd get drowned in things like trolling, poke pole fishing, handline techniques, Cuban Yo-Yo fishing, deep jigging, jug fishing.... the list would be endless !

Some of our fishing club members go out with fly tackle, spin rods, ultra-light tackle, bait casting rods, bait rods, etc., etc. ... as they try to go "across the board" with catches in all catagories.  It is a South Florida fishing club thing.  We call that "GONZO FISHING". Many of us did that for years.  Now I don't do anything but fly fish.  My choice. To each his own !
