From Walter Simberski on the term, GRIP :-

    Gordy,

I agree that we want to make it clear that the death grip is not one of the preferred grips
for casting, but trying to do away with the term "grip" might be a little too extreme. I don't know
of any other sport where the term "grip" is frowned upon and I think everybody understands what
is meant when we say grip. If we encourage instructors to use terms like "grasp" or "hand hold"
or "grapple" we are just going to confuse a lot of beginners.

As instructors we need to use terms that are both simple and precise. Grip seems to fit
that bill quite nicely. Of course, grip may just be term that is only popular in North America.
I'm not widely travelled enough to know.

If people in other areas of the world want to call a wrench a spanner, or the trunk of a car a boot,
I'm not going to tell them they are wrong if grasp is more popular than grip.

    My 2 cents worth,

    Walter

    Walter....    I, for one, agree.

The term, "grip" has been firmly entrenched in most of our fly casting literature, talks, demos and teachings.

We can have a, "light grip", a, "feather grip", a, "tight" grip, or a, "death grip".  Most good casters have what we might call a, "variable grip" (Tight only when needed during max acceleration).   We can also have different hand/cork positions which we call, "grips" ....... one handed and two handed.  To some, the, "grip" is the cork handle.

A, "grip" can be a kind of suitcase.

Some people call a certain illness, "the grip"

Lastly, as we learn, we get a GRIP on casting concepts !!!!
