  • RE: RSP or Stop

    ol Al...

Joe is absolutely correct about not giving up the teaching of the STOP.  I don't teach the details until coaching MCI candidates.....not even for CCI candidates.

While what is being said may be true, I will not change my lesson plans for
beginning students,  Teach someone to first stop the rod and then teach them
the variables.  New students have enough difficulties without adding
    additional problems.

    This is from Bruce Richards

I agree with you Joe. Electronic analysis of literally hundreds of casts
showed very few where the "stop" was complete, where rod rotation went to
zero. The only casts where we did see complete stops were casts made where
the goal was the absolute tightest loop possible, which is rarely a goal in
casting, and never when fishing. Normally the rod is still rotating forward
from 30-60 deg/sec at RSP. While this opens the loop a bit, it also makes
the loop much smoother, more functional, and less trouble. If the stop is
complete it keeps the rod tip higher which means the loop bottom leg will
be higher also. But the counterflex and rebound will be quite harsh.

There is no point in mentioning any of this to any but the most advanced
student who might have some weird interest in it. Our average student
doesn't stop nearly fast enough, or complete enough, telling them to really
stop the rod hard will still not result in a complete stop, but hopefully
    an improved stop.

I?ll take Gordy?s statement one further, if I may.  The rod WILL relax (i.e. ? assume RSP) if we come to a constant velocity with the rod tip.  Considering that the required input energy approaches zero as acceleration goes to zero (constant velocity), we CANNOT maintain load in the rod.  So what Gordy says about not having to stop the rod to achieve RSP is true; in fact, if you ?soft stroke? the late portion of the casting stroke, you may have no unloading energy from the rod when you finally DO stop the rod.  The rod may already be essentially straight when you come to the stopping point.  I?ve seen this occasionally over the years, although usually with less aggressive casters.

I have to agree that to much information is just over load it teaching. But to understand yourself is very important.
So I will still teach the stop with temperance...
