Hi, Rick....
Re your questions:
Just got back from a dawn patrol. Landed one big poon and had another eaten by a monster bull shark. The shark chased the fish right back to my skiff....the fish dove under my hull (about 4'deep) and the shark struck my skiff and thrashed about spraying water all over me. For a moment I thought he'd capsize me! He eventually caught my tarpon and tore him to bits.
Now, your casting question is different than the one you gave me yesterday. To this one I'll answer that I can cast the 6 wt. line on the 6 wt. rod farther than I can a 7 wt. line on the same rod. I might even do better with distance underlining another notch to a 5 wt. line....because I could then carry a lot more line when false casting without overlining the rod.
Remember.....from a weight and rod load standpoint, if I carry 40 - 45 feet of a 5 wt. line, then I'm really throwing a 7 wt. line.
The question you asked previously, however, was whether there had been anything written about the max distance one could achieve with outfits ranging from 2 wt. to 12 wt. assuming each rod was matched to a line of its own rating.
I don't know of anything written on that. Intuitively, I feel that the same caster with no wind could probably make greater distance with each successive jump in tackle rating up to the point that he/she couldn't efficiently handle the heavier outfits. This could well explain why the competition distance casters cast with outfits that match their ability to handle heavy rods (within the framework of the competition rules.)

Hi GordyAny results on the (wt=distances) question ?There are a number of factors to achieve distance, i.e.. line speed, rod load/bend, tracking ability (the casters) etc. If the tracking and ability of the casters stayed the same and he could maintain the same line speed (or this was comparable), would the distance be increased if you went up one line size i.e. a 7wt line on a 6wt rod (this would give you the ability to load the rod much deeper) or would you achieve greater distance if you went down a line size i.e. less gravitational pull or would the efficiencies be great by staying to the designated line wt ??Are you fishing ??
