Howdy Gordy.
Trajectory I define at the line* between the Backward and
Forward loops. With the Rod tip on this line.
*Now I am using the term 'line' as a imagery line between two
points.
When teaching I try to keep the backcast on the initial pick up a
"UP CAST - BEHIND YOU" This is done by starting with the rod tip low or at the
water/ground. This action will help get the fly UP and away from the
body.
If you look at the Trajectory it is from the point the fly leaves
the water up and about 12 ft above you. This is the plane that the line should
follow when casting. When using an overhead cast. To say 'backcast' is what
gets many people impaled by the low flying
hook......

By, "LINE" I think you mean an imaginary line representing the 180 degrees
between the trajectory of the back cast and that of the forward cast, right
?
OK for casting in the vertical or near vertical rod plane. Whenever you
refer to, "UP" or, "DOWN" you are automatically referring to something in
relation to the ground. This won't work for casting with a horizontal or
near horizontal rod plane, which is why I prefer to refer to trajectory or line
plane in relation to the rod plane.
Staying with casting in the vertical rod plane, we can refer to Charles Ritz
and his, HS/HL casts which he describes in his book, A FLY FISHER'S LIFE.
