Jerry Puckett on teaching/discovering a personal STYLE:-

Yes Gordy again you are right on target. Now in terms of starting
with someone brand new to casting, how does one help the person
discover a style for effective casting?
What guide lines would you use? Thanks
Jerry

There are two schools of thought on this:
1.) Teach the student YOUR style, then let him gravitate to his own with
practice. This is the way I see Joan Wulff teaching.
2.) Allow the student to develope a style right from the very
beginning. This is the way Bill Gammel teaches.
(Check out his video: TEACHING YOURSELF TO FLY CAST by Bill
Gammel.)
A middle-of-the road approach gets closer to the answer to your
question. This is where I might coach a student as he/she tries different
elements of style as a, "trial and error" exercise. Of course, that's best
done, not with a class of students, but with one-on-one instruction. I
would consider this one if the student is having trouble with multiple casting
tasks.
