Gordy,
With all do respect to
the program this is where I find some disagreement with
those in the fishing
community that have a hard time making a parallel with
what is on the exam
and what is actually done in a fishing situation. Doing it
one way or the
other is not "correct" unless that is what is asked
for
specifically.
The more slack on the water the longer the drift, no
matter what we call the
cast.

Sort of like, "all's fair in love and war".......(and fishing) (Quote from Francis F. Medley....without the, "(and fishing.)")
Rather than being rigid with respect to a, "right way" and a, "wrong way" when I'm examining, I try to keep an open mind and respect the candidate's explanation of the way the task was performed. The explanation must match the performance, of course.
As an example, if the candidate made a curved layout with the reach/mend and was able to explain it the way you did.....and could do it either way, I feel I'd have to pass him.....because I'd be convinced he had enough control to do it either way and (more importantly) had a true understanding of the principles involved.
I use the same reasoning in judging the reach/mend as to whether the feeding lane is reached by slipping line as the reach move is made, or the cast is made beyond the lane and the reach move brings the fly back accurately to the lane. Point is, I want the candidate to understand both methods and to be able to do either.
