  • RE: STOP of the line hand

    Al....

    Check out Steve Rajeff's answer.

For the same amount of line carried and the same distance of the cast, I would make a longer haul when using the soft action rod.....but that is because I'd be making a longer casting stroke and greater rod arc for increased tip travel.

I'd be, "matching" my stroke length and timing of my rod arm with that of my line hand for the most part.  An extra momentary, "twitch" with the line hand immediately after RSP may well increase distance.

    You asked:
1.)  Do you think there is merit in making a sudden crisp STOP with the line hand at the conclusion of your haul when trying for maximum distance ?

To make a haul that is not in rhythm with the tip of the rod is not effective as it could be. The Stop of the line hand must be the same as the stop of the rod to RSP for maximum increase in line speed.

2.)    Should you make that line hand stop at the exact time you make the stop with the rod hand ?

Note in the above reply I referred to the TIP of the rod. As there is travel in the tip after the butt is stopped. This is when the rod is traveling Faster than just movement of the hand. This Unloading of the bent rod to rsp.
So that the haul will last longer than the rod butt movement.
The HAUL should match the tip of the rod in speed, & distance. (theoretical)

To push this thinking a little further.
If you are making short cast you are only bending the tip of the rod. So a short haul would match the tip. Long cast you would bend the rod deeper then you would use a longer haul to match the tip. Keep this thought. Soft or slow action rods vs.. fast action rods. would you not haul longer with a slow action or short and fast with a fast action rod?
