Randy...
I'll pass your excellent answers to the Group.
You have noted that the haul can decrease the necessary work of the rod arm.....good point.
Also noted is that the haul can, "break surface tension easier". Where this can be a help is in performing a water haul or distance, "pickup". In line with this is the same use of a haul in making a dramatic up stream mend.
One might also add that a haul can be used as a so-called, "check haul" to help turn over a long leader.
It's stretching it a bit, but I sometimes use a line hand haul to start my retrieve the instant my fly hits the water when using a sinking line when casting to a fish on a very shallow flat.

Gordy,
Here is my quick stab as the haul relates to distance (not tuck casts, etc.)...

ol Al...& Group:
In line with our messages about hauls, are these exam questions:
1.) Name at least 3 things accomplished by the haul.
Increases line speed
Increases rod load/energy
Takes up slack
When using an unbalanced outfit, a haul can compensate for too light of a line for the rod
Helps in tightening of loops in some cases
Reduces fatique of the casting arm
Breaks surface tension easier
2.) Which of them is most important to achieving distance ?
Increasing line speed (as long as the loop is tight). A fast loop travels farthest.
3.) Which is the least important to an efficient caster ?
Taking up slack. An efficient caster doesn't need to use the haul as a crutch.
