John...
I agree. All should read your message and think about it.
That tail produced by a high aimed (trajectory) back cast followed by a high or more horizontal forward cast occurs becsause of the concavity between these strokes, so long as the ROD PLANE is kept about the same for the forward and back casts. It won't happen if the caster changes rod planes significantly between back and fore casts. In doing that, he's making an elliptical cast.

Gordon:
Jim asked a couple of questions about tracking that were really very good questions. Tracking can be defined as lateral movement of the rod tip exactly as Bruce explained. However, for a CCI there are really two major reasons that the tip moves to the side. One is from the caster moving the tip to the side. The other is from the fly line pulling the tip to the side when the fly line is out of plane with the forward (or rearward) cast. An example of this would also be to have a back cast that is too high causing a tailing loop in the forward cast. This is a fly line error in the vertical plane.
For accuracy I focus greatly on the fly line tracking. It is also a huge issue when casting in the wind or when casting long distances.
