ol Al......and Jerry :
You are correct about Jeff Wagner's write-up on distance. (Best thing I've ever read on the subject !) Perhaps we could convince Jeff to forward a copy to the Group.
ol Al....your comments on exercise are right on target.
As you point out, as one gets along in years (I'm 75), it becomes even more important to do regular exercise....not to "get more distance".....but to avoid tendon and joint injury. Regular exercise also builds strength which can, if used properly, result in better control.
I do a run/race-walk every morning with a 3 lb. lead block in each hand. I do 100 biceps curls and 100 extension triceps exercises each day with a 6 lb. wt. in hand. Helps a lot.

Al, In my long distance practice I have made some improvement and your suggestions are excellent. Thanks to Bruce Richards, Tom White, Jeff Wagner and Gordy Hill their advise has also been on target. Working on carrying more line, watching both the back cast and forward cast, tightening up the loops, casting with a relaxed tempo to fast line speed while maintaining tight loop shape, using drift and lay back, working on the right amount of power and stroke length for the line carried and being especially patient while the back cast reaches full extension-- these have helped. On the back cast I learned a phase from one young man casting a 5 wt. 105 feet. While reaching as far back as he could (stroke extension) with drift and lay back, looking at his back cast this fine young man would say out loud,"SIT ON IT", his way of forcing patience while the line fully extended to the rear. Also, experimenting with ways to increase stroke length is helping. Nothing is permanent or written in stone because I am still finding my style and slowly increasing distance. The double haul is very important. Working on proper double haul-- power, balance and technique has added distance. Being 65 I would suggest injury prevention exercises with repetitive light weights. These exercises strengthen the casting muscles and makes casting and practice easier.Jeff Wagner has an excellent write-up and exercises on Long distance casting which I have been using to my advantage. To me this is a lot of fun and a very enjoyable journey! Thanks for your help.Jerry

This is the mental list I go through that has helped me. I'm teaching my mom and dad to cast and it seems to be improving theirs as well. (so far)1) Sharpen my stops on the backcast2) Wait longer to allow the rod to load up (better drift)3) Don't overpower the stroke into the second stop.4) Sharpen my stop on the forward castI got one from Dave that was really good Dave if you can resend it I must have dropped in some file that I do not use ... Bummer is was right on. I wanted to make a copy of it.ol AlAllen Crise FFF Master Casting InstructorSOC VP of EducationHawk Ridge Flycasting School2508 A County Road 1011Glen Rose, TX 76043254-897-2045geocities.com/rrdoctorflysoup@xxxxxxxxxx
