Tom White also talks about using sound as a teaching/learning tool for 
casting.
He listens for a sound that increases (smoothly) during the casting stroke 
with
a pause in between strokes. If the sound is constant during the cast then 
you
are not accelerating smoothly and/or not pausing at the end of the stroke.

I believe Gordy mentioned something similar in an earlier posting when he
talked about practicing in the dark.

One more reason to avoid rock concerts early in life.  :)
