    Walter & Group...

    From Phil Gay:

    Gordy,
Words of wisdom for sure!  I do many of these same things in the trout world!  Clients are fascinated by the roll cast removal of a fly from a rock.  Doesn't work as well on logs.
    Thanks for sharing!

[GH] Our next Group message will be a recap of what we covered in the past 13 messages on Hauls.  I'll be preparing it today.

Here are some off topic messages:-

    From Bob Rumpf:

    Good morning Gordy,

I know there are a lot of folks in the group still looking for "Presentation". One showed up on eBay this morning and can be purchased for $125.00. Whereas this is a lot of money, it's not near as much as most dealers are asking for this book. I just thought some members of the group might like to know this book is available. All they have to do, is put the number I have placed below in the "Search" slot, and the sale will come up. This looks like a very nice hardcover copy.

    Regards,

    Bob

    [GH]  Bob,

As you know, I think this remains one of the very best books ever written on fly fishing as well as fly casting.  It was published by Gary Borger back in 1995.

I've recommended it as "must reading" for years, until it became so scarce and some of the prices asked soared off the page.

Even valuable as an investment..... as the years go by, it will do nothing but increase in value.

[GH]  Many of you have saved some of our key messages for later study or review.  This from Bill Wheeler:

    Gordy
First, I just want to let you know how useful this board has been to me.  It has been a great learning experience.  I have saved all the posts in a separate folder.  Unfortunately, I had a major email crash last week and just today realized that the folder with all the emails from the MCI group have been lost that I put in that folder.  My fault, I let me email get too large and it crashed my entire system repeatedly.   I don’t know if you have things archived for the later conversations or not and whether you could easily send them in bulk. If so, I would appreciate having those sent to me, if it is a pain I understand.   I came on board in June and I have lost everything until this post on 19 December of 2012 but maybe some since then  because I may have filed some after that date.  I have the link to the archived posts through 2011 from the website.
    Thanks
    bill

Can any of you help him with this ?

[GH]  Some of our members feel that we occasionally go too far with physics and mathematical explanations.
At the same time, others take the position that we are fortunate to have, in our Group, members who have far more physics and math knowledge than I do and can come in with scientific explanations to help expand our understanding of fly casting.

These members are fully aware that detailed physics and math explanations are unpalatable to many of our Group.

I would certainly not agree with reducing all fly casting mechanics to scientific detail and then obsessing over it.  We'd "lose the forest for the trees".  In the end, many of us would find that the fun and beauty of fly casting had been lost.

Treading a "middle of the road" between science, common sense, "direct teaching", the "Zen approach", and the poetic art of fly casting is something I try to do as your moderator.

    Perhaps I can do better.

Bruce Richards, as many of you know, has studied the intricate details of fly casting for many years while working with PhD. physicist, Noel Perkins. They have taken none of the older teachings for granted, but have designed and carried out many experiments to prove or disprove the "conventional knowledge" behind fly casting.  Other members have physics, mechanics, and mathematical backgrounds and have done their own research some of which they have shared with us.  To ignore their input, I think, would be sheer folly.  Let me include Ally Gowans, Grunde Lovolle and Walter Simbirski.

    This from Bruce Richards:

    Hi Gordy,
While our sport is really just physics in action, most people are not scientifically prepared for explanations like Ally or Noel might provide. Our instructors, our Masters in particular, really should have a good basic scientific understanding of fly casting dynamics, without that they are not as knowledgeable as they should be, in my opinion. There are "engineers" and "poets", both should understand the science, and both should be able to teach effectively entirely without it. When instructors communicate with each other, some amount of scientific understanding is necessary I think. I don't think we need to know the formulas and math, but do need to understand the basics.. Knowing that wind resistance increases a lot when speed increases a little is important, that the relationship is the square of velocity isn't important.

There is workable middle ground I think. Stick to the big picture of the dynamics, explain simply, leave out all math and formulas. But instructors MUST understand some key things, like the rod bend/casting arc/tip path relationship. They MUST understand that simply increasing stroke length does not cure a tailing loop. Without that they cannot be fully effective, and if they are Masters, they should not test others.

    Bruce
