Walter & Group...
[GH] More thoughts on messages with complicated information. We'll have the scoop on what actually happened with the caster and his distance cast problems tomorrow.
First, this announcement from David Lambert:
Gordy --
This is off topic but a worthy shout-out to one of our own.
FFF-CI Joe Mahler has just published what may become his second indispensable small knot book from the venerable presses at the Headwater/Stackpole Books imprint. His newest is titled Essential Knots and Rigs for Saltwater. Joe is a master illustrator. You've seen his drawings in all the fly publications and most of the conventional fishing mags. His knot recommendations are chosen from personal preference. . . and they're not just the usual collection. He's he's drawn from his experience as a guide and casting instructor to create the knots which populate this book. Joe's also a very able two-handed instructor who works out of Norm Zeigler's shop in Naples.
Here's the Amazon Inside Book link for those who want to know what's inside: http://www.amazon.com/Essential-Knots-Rigs-Salt-Water/dp/0811710246
Joe's first book, Essential Knots and Rigs for Trout is reviewed at MidCurrent here: http://midcurrent.com/books/review-essential-knots-rigs-for-trout/
Joe's illustrations are so clear and vivid that the text is almost unnecessary.
Enjoy.
David

[GH] From Jim Barr,
Gordy- I could not agree more with Liam's sentiments and comments. I have been turned off by all of this technical gobbly goop. Perhaps consideration should be given to heavily seasoning this Study Group more towards consistent and practical approaches to constructive assistance to those wanting to pursue their Masters certification and sparing most of us from the "Einstein Approach"... that is a huge turnoff. In my opinion this is the kind of elitist bull legacy that so many of us "flycasters for fly fishings sake" are trying to dispel in our passion, and in our efforts to change how people think about flyfishing.

[GH] Counterpoint, by Tim Lawson :
Hey Gordy,
I will look forward to Liam's new blog that is devoted to specific topics to be covered on the MCI exam. I'm sure when he is sorting through 100+ emails a day as you do, trying to pick out the ones to present to the group, he will do a much better job sticking to THE TOPIC.
I read the the messages sent by Walter, Server, and Ally with some interest........until a mathematical formula appears.........at which point my eyes glaze over and I move on to the next message. Some of it, however is interesting and, for me, helpful.
The Professional Development Committee is working hard to develop a mentoring program for CIs striving for MCI certification. Each CI who wants to participate will have a Master helping them navigate the muddy waters, and that Master will certainly serve to help them separate the wheat from the chaff....so to speak. Those of us that have had to separate our own chaff over the years you have devoted to your email messages will always be thankful for your dedication, and you never need to apologize for adding a little academia to the mix.
All the best,
Tim

[GH] From Len Anderson:
I fall into the Master Candidate that tolerates the physics/science behind flycasting, knowing I would probably wouldn't be expected to remember all of it. That being said, I do learn something from those conversations if I keep it in perspective. I am learning this craft to be a better flyfishing guide, flyfishing instructor, and flycaster. I believe in balance in my life and part of that balance for me is to get into areas that make me uncomfortable, stay there long enough to learn and become more well rounded in our sport. At this point in my journey I am very thankful to have this Study Group to help me understand what it takes to become a casting instructor. Keep up the good work, I look forward to the learning that is taking place.

[GH] Bob Hansell sends his opinion :
Gordy,
I cannot resist responding to this string by saying I agree with Liam.
On your 3 groups below, they all share something in common: “Why do I need to know this?”
1. If it is scientific, how do I use scientific evidence to teach or share how it helps me cast, so it helps me fish.
2. If it is pure math or physics, connect it to why something works and then how it helps me teach or fish.
3. If it is pure poetry, tell me how feeling helps me translate that feeling to a student or the feel of fighting a fish.
Science for science sake, math for math’s sake and poetry for poetry sake is only part of the story. Real connection between teacher and student explains the “why” in the terms the student is most comfortable. So we need to be able to explain the science, math and poetry of a casting situation. We need multiple arrows in the quiver. However, good teachers move from the “how” to the “why”.
The real connection between the angler and fish is dependent on being totally present in the moment. Part of being totally present is to draw from the teaching and apply it to the current situation.
I don’t really think it is complicated. In my opinion, genius is explaining complexity on the other side of complexity; simplicity
Like I said, I just could not resist.
Thanks for stirring the pot……..
Bob

[GH] From Carl Zarelli :
Gordy I have to agree with Liam , who are we trying to teach here . Engineers or fly casting instructors ?
I have always looked at this for what it was intended for a " study group " for the masters test.
Let's ask ourselves this question . Would any of this information below be asked of a master ? I hope not....
Or is it as Liam says, "a lot of "Masters" are showing what they know without having any regards for those who are trying to obtain their Masters Cert. Looking and reading whats coming out from these master to me all they are doing is showing what "experts" they are. Wake up it's not about you, it's supposed to be helping guys to obtain their masters certGGS. "
My simple suggestion would be to put the engineer types in a blog and they can flog each other with equations till the cows come home.
Sorry to go on here but I have been looking at this information too long and been silent.
You don't have to post this if you don't want to it is up to you.
Hope all is well Gordy and take care .

[GH] From Mark Surtees:
Hi Gordy
I am, generally speaking, an anti-measurer..serves no useful purpose from an ordinary instructional point of view in my opinion.
However, it is no crime to be interested in the physics that underlie basic casting mechanics is it ?.. there’s plenty of candidates who are, both at this level and at CCI. Personally I’m very glad that there are people out there who are both qualified and prepared to explain it to those of us who are unfamiliar with such things.
And ,if it’s not important for masters candidates to be exposed to this “energy, energy transmission, loop size” stuff that Liam claims is just complicating things, then it had best be taken out of the exam hadn’t it. There’s plenty in there more complicated than that, I was certainly asked about it in mine…perhaps it should all go….all the bookish stuff…irrelevant… because the fish don’t read books.. ??... blimey…that’s hardly nailing the argument is it ?…unless the fish are going to take the MCCI exam that is…then the questions can be constructed so that fish can answer them….that’d be cool..I’d like to help out on that one… J

[GH] From Jim Bass :
Gordy I am glad Liam got his belly full of the folks with the scientific information and express it so well. I want to be a better instructor of fly casting not physics. We need to work on subjects about teaching. I know we have many in the group who by profession are educators and should give us a large reservoir of knowledge about teaching. Let's see if we can enlist them to start some discussion on education topics... Best Jim
