    Walter & Group...

    [GH]  From Steve Smith:

Thank you Walter. As I'm relatively new I will look forward to this as there must be a ton of  information I have not seen yet. This masters group is something quite amazing and it is so great to be connected to all the great minds of fly casting.

    Thanks,

    Steve

    [GH]  From Gary Davison:

    Gordy,

I am so glad to see Walter start the snow ball rolling on this project.  It is a large undertaking to say the least.  Your archives regarding the study group feedback and topics touched on through the years must be very extensive indeed.

It needs to be published for all of us to review, learn and share for years to come, plus allow us members to reflect on the importance of not only our members input to the group, but also your outstanding review, digest and summation of the information accumulated and provided.

I can say this with all respect to others who may try in the future to keep this study group going, that there is only one Gordy Hill!

Your vast knowledge and ability to communicate with all of us within study group membership is a major achievement to say the least!

It has been a great honor for me to be associated with the group and to have your support.

This means a great deal to me.

    All the best
    Gary Davison

    [GH]  Gary,

Thanks for your thoughts .... though I doubt I deserve them.

Remember...   Over the years, I have learned from our great membership!

What I've been trying to do is to give them a forum to teach.  We learn from one another.

[GH]  Here are some suggestions which include various ways to come up with a usable index. Since this topic is outside my fields of expertise, I'll simply include them.

In the end, to be of value to the Group, it must be a vehicle available to each of us.

    [GH]  From Paul Arden:

    Hi Gordy,

The best way to approach this would be to tag each discussion with multiple tags, such as Distance Casting, Loop Control, Leader Formulae etc and then have an index which picks on the key words. That way you can have multiple indexes as well as a comprehensive search function. There is software which enables this, but it's still a hell of a lot of work. If this approach is decided upon then Walter certainly needs assistance.

    Cheers,
    Paul

    [GH]  From Mark Milkovich :

    Gordy and Walter,
I have been archiving the study group discussions for the past few years.  Since we completed our exam review this past summer I’ve been focused on the casting and am behind on the archiving. Here is the “General Table of Contents” that evolved in that process.  I tried to keep the discussions roughly organized around the five topic areas for the exam and within those five areas I broke them into what I considered to be major sub topics; here is that list of sub topics:
    A.    Casting – Distance Issues
    B.    Casting - Non Distance Issues
    C.    Casting – Teaching
    D.    Casts – By Type or Caster
    E.    Casting – Toys & Bag of Tricks
    F.    Fly Line Issues
    G.    Leader Issues
    H.    Fly Issues
    I.      Rod Issues
    J.     Reel & Misc Equipment Issues
    K.    Fishing Issues
    L.     Casting Augmentations – Mends, Hauls, Shooting, Slides, etc.
    M.   Two Handed Issues
    N.    MCI Exam Clarification & Prep
    O.    Miscellaneous
    P.    Hyperlinked Articles and Sites

For each of these subtopics I created a Word Document which leads off with a table of contents based on the “discussion topic” that Gordy used  in his e-mails. See for example the Casting- Distance Issues table of contents below. The items in the table of contents are hyperlinks to the actual discussions which follow in the document. Some discussions relate to more than one sub topic but instead of duplicating the discussion I simply copied and pasted the hyperlinks in each of the sub topic documents where it was relevant (see for example items 5 through 13 from the Casting Augmentations document).
    Casting – Distance Issues (A)
    1.     Wrist Break in Hauling (A001)
    2.     High Haul (A002)
    3.     Line Carried & Amount you Can Shoot (A003)
    4.     Acceleration (A004)
    5.     Rod Tip & Line Relationship (A005)
    6.     Distance Practice (A006)
    7.     Bruce Richards on Kyte/Moran Good vs. Elite Casters (A007)
    8.     Slide Loading (A008)
    9.     170degree cast (A009)
    10.  Effect of high humidity on casting (A010)
    11.  Climbing Loops Etc. (A011)
    12.  Shooting (A012)
    13.  Categorizing the Haul (A013)
    14.  Joan Wulff on Slide Loading (A014)
    15.  Defining Slide (A015)

Casting Augmentations - Mends, Hauls, Shooting, Slides, etc.
        1.    Practicing Aerial Mends Quiz #1 (L001)
    2.     Mends Quiz #2 (L002)
    3.     Effect of Haul Angle on the Cast (L003)
        4.    Enhanced Hauls (L004)
        5.    Slide Loading
        6.    Shooting
        7.    Categorizing the Haul
        8.    Joan Wulff on Slide Loading
        9.    Defining Slide
        12.    High Haul

The Hyperlinked Articles and Sites(P) is a folder which contains all the illustrations, videos, and other non textual material that accompanies the discussions. Hyperlinks to these materials are included in the discussions.
Walter you mentioned keeping the discussions in their original form. That would certainly make the archiving task somewhat easier but I have found that some editing to eliminate nonessential information really does compact the materials to a much more manageable size when going back for research purposes. With respect to the quizzes for example, instead of including them all, I look for a representative sample which covers the major points and call it done.

Let me know if I can be of help.
    Mark
