Walter Simbirski & Group....
[GH] I'd best send this one out close on the heels of my last message, today.
>From Steve Smith in response to "Preparation for the MCI Exam":
Wow thanks for this Gordy.I think I will be ready for my masters in 2025!!!!
I hope I can still cast by then.
Steve

[GH] Steve,
I thought of that right after I sent it.
This might unjustly intimidate other Master candidates.
Note that I said Dayle Mazzarella's preparations were, ".........way on the other side of the equation".
(" SO - I thought I'd present a description of Master preparation which lies way on the other side of this equation." )
By that, I meant he had taken it to extremes.
Most successful candidates pass their Master exams without going to those extremes. At least one mentor is recommended as well as one trial exam, though this is not by any means mandatory.
I should also point out that Dayle did this as a sort of "crash course" in a relatively short period of time following his passing the CCI exam. This contrasts with the way most candidates do it with a couple of years or more of experience casting and teaching as a CCI before taking the MCI test.
Some candidates take as much as 5 or years after they become CCI's to get as much casting and (especially) teaching experience as they can.
Best,
Gordy

[GH] Steve replies :
All understood.I think what you are saying is be prepared. It's one of those things though, that the more you study the more you realize what you don't know!.Nine different reasons to false cast?(I'm at 4 and who needs more).
I look at the master as in life, it's a journey not a destination!!Keep up the good work,
Steve

[GH] From Mike Duzynski :
Hi Gordy & All
Do examiners continue with the exam after hearing answers like this on the beginning of the test?
Ps
I didn't get attachment with Dayle exam review.
Cheers
Michael

[GH] From Louis Bruno :
Gordy,
Thanks for the info…if we cannot team up with a mentor what option(s) would you suggest?

[GH] That is a problem for some candidates. Alternatives ?.....
Some of this requires that you be pro-active in seeking help and advice. You will be pleasantly surprised at how available and helpful some seasoned fly casting instructors can be once they know what you are trying to do.
- Team up with a "study buddy" if you have another CCI nearby who plans to take the Master's exam, even if your respective time tables differ widely.
Before taking my exam, I did that with Rick Whorwood and Bruce Chard. Bruce lived nearby....but Rick lived in Canada and I in the lower Florida Keys. We spent lots of time quizzing and challenging one another ... each time with a SHORT ANSWER and a LONG ANSWER.
One way of gaining a long distance "study buddy" is to tell us where you live and we'll see if one of our 343 members include candidates like you who would like to do what you are doing.
- Try to break away to attend conclaves and regional council meetings. Sign up for workshops if available. I realize that not all candidates can take time off from work and family to do this. Expenses can be a problem for many. A Master Prep Workshop is given at each International Conclave (Fair). Some candidates have attended more than one of them.
- If no openings remain for workshops you consider valuable for your preparations, contact the MCI or CBOG hosting them; explain that you are a Master candidate, and request that they allow you to assist them or, at the very least, to observe. I would expect most or all of them to help out by complying.
- Years ago, I contacted Floyd Franke who was chairman of the CBOG at the time and asked for his help and advice. Although we lived 1600 miles apart, he was very helpful and in fact enthusiastic to help me. Over the course of a year, he sent me many "assignments" to complete ... then he'd spend time critiquing them.
- Inquire if there are Masters or CBOG's giving courses or demonstrations near enough for you to attend without spending a lot of $$$. Introduce yourself.
- I know of several candidates who volunteered to assist at nearby fly casting schools. A great way to learn and develop confidence.
- There are various Master Candidate prep courses around the U.S.A. This would require travel and some expense. They are often quite valuable for preparation. I think the FFF Office personal may know of those. (Several years ago, Tom White and I hosted them in Florida.)
- If you have not done it already, it would be a good idea for you to contact the FFF office to find out about other CCI's and Masters in your home State. Most of them will appreciate your contacting them for advice.
