    Walter & Group...

    From Paul Arden:

    Hi Gordy,

I think I would like to see the distance cast set up across the wind. For me the distance is not really important, but good technique and teaching are paramount.  This would be a good area to raise our game as instructors. Candidates coming for CCI are often armed with accuracy competition techniques and consequently are very good in this area. Eventually it would be great if we could expand our teaching base to cover competition distance at club level too. This would be around a 110-115 cast.

I'd be looking to hear about delayed rotation/drag, picking targets back and front, haul timing, force application, tracking drills, use of the body, different "styles"/techniques for distance, shooting or not on the final backcast, long line pick-ups etc.

I'd like to think that we could get there as a group in 4-5 years and I think as MCIs we are expected to be competent in this area. We can in fact raise the game.

    Cheers, Paul

    [GH]  Paul,

My best prepared MCI candidates are savvy enough that they usually choose a course with the wind onto the line hand side when given the opportunity.  Of course, the best competition distance casters have learned to adjust tracking to a reasonable extent much better than I can when casting in a strong cross wind.

I've noted that when coaching them, some MCI candidates will choose to do the distance cast into a modest head wind.  I wondered about that for a while, until I noted that these were often casters who were less confident and less proficient with their back casts.

Workshops on distance techniques such as those given by Jeff Wagner could go a long way to help with this.

I highlighted your second paragraph.  It says a lot !

    Gordy
