    Walter & Group...

    [GH] From Paul Arden :

    Hi Gordy,

that's interesting. I consider Counterflex to be RSP1 - MCF (Max Counterflex).
Rebound is not a term I use very much, but would consider it MCF1 - MCF2.

There's a significant difference there! I wonder how others regard the terms?

    Cheers, Paul

    [GH] Paul,

That is one way of viewing it.  It is the way I termed it in my first message.  Then I thought about it using different logic.

All in where you wish to start and stop counterflex.  The way I've been looking at it is that the rod is still bent in the direction of the load until the tip goes through a straight position (RSP 1).  Only then, does it begin to bend in the opposite direction.  THIS BEND STARTING AT RSP 1 is what I call COUNTERFLEX.

MCF (MAX COUNTERFLEX) would, then, happen with this new bend is complete at RSP 2.  After RSP 2, the rod bends back in the other direction to the next (and without more vibration, the final) Rod Straight Position which is RSP 3.  I call that final reversal of the bend, REBOUND.

Granted, the rod begins to unbend after its maximum bend under load somewhere close to its point of maximum load. However, it has not changed its bend direction until RSP 1.

Once again, the problem of definitions haunts us !

Good idea you have to see how others view these terms.  Let's save that for our next Group topic.

[GH]  Answers from Steve Smith :

Gordy here are my answers to your interesting questions.

List as many techniques as you can for the curved cast
    1. vertical positive curve cast (over powered)
2.vertical positive curve cast (over powered )
3.horizontal negative curve cast (under powered)
#1 and #2 above can also be done on a horizontal plane

    2) Describe each one:
    1) positive curve cast both vertical and horizontal (just change the plane)
-As you make your forward cast you turn your wrist inward( toward your line hand) remembering that the line follows your rod tip.Make sure you have a solid stop.

    2) vertical positive curve : you need to start your cast with the palm and reel facing your face.As you cast forward you need to cast your hand outward and away from your line hand. It is also very important to keep your eye on where you want the fly to go.Also a very strong stop is important.

    3) horizontal negative cast (under powered):Make a very weak side arm cast and drop your rod as you stop and the line will land in a curve as the line does not have enough energy to straighten.

    3) Difference between curve casts and aerial mends
the curve cast movement happens before the stop of the rod and the aerial mend happens after the stop.

    4) Can the curve cast be combined with a mend?
I would say yes although I've never fished that way.

    5) the move would be to make your positive (over powered cast ) cast first, move rod tip inward towards line hand side after the stop make your mend by kicking the rod, it either to the left or right.

6)How would you make a right angle curve cast more efficient.I would have said to pull the rod back towards you after your stop, but I think you said that is now a mend,so I'm not sure of the correct answer?

[GH] You are correct in describing one way of making the right angle curve cast more efficiently. By now you probably know that by pulling the rod back you are repositioning the line after the cast, so I'd recognize that as a mend done to increase the curve.

    7) This cast would work well if you were trying to fish the bank of the river. The line on retrieve would follow the for a longer period.

8)When would you fish a under powered curve cast  : when there was not a lot of wind and when I wanted a gentle delivery.

    9) When would you prefer to use a powered curve:If the conditions were windy also if I need to get around a tall object or I wanted a little more distance.

    10)  What can not be accomplished with an underpowered curve:You can not get around a tree or bush or big rock with an underpowered curve.

11)What purpose would you fish a curve cast:
    - to get around say a rock to fish the other side
-or to fish in front of a rock so that when it curves in front of the rock you will get a nice swing that might entice a strike or  curve the line so the fish sees the fly before the line.

    12) For a right handed person going from right to left it is a positive curve cast and going left to right is a negative curve cast.

[GH] Not incorrect.  However, as I've pointed out, since the terms "positive" and "negative" can be used to describe different things.  It might be well to avoid them.

    13) Can you give  a reference on the Corkscrew curve cast :Yes Developed by Bob Pelz and Gary Borger 1970.Can find info on it from Jason's website.

    14) Need help here found info very sketching and still don't follow whats going on here.I could not find a good video so I could not see what they are doing with a corkscrew curve???

[GH]  I don't have a video.  There are at least two ways of performing the corkscrew cast. One of them is described in Jason Borger's book. * I do it differently .... by making a forward cast while forming 1 3/4 concentric circles, the second smaller than the first, then shooting line after the stop sequence.  This is the most difficult cast for me to teach.  Also, it is not a cast of great value for fishing, unless you wish to place big curve at a greater distance than you can achieve by other means.  It is NOT on the MCI exam.

    15)  Re Lefty Kreh easier with weighted fly:I would agree with that because the weighted fly would have a tendency to kick the line after the stop. Therefore helping the line curve more.
