    Walter & Group...

    [GH]  From Jim Bass :

    Subject:     Excluding CCI's from information.

Gordy I am like Bob when it comes to some masters excluding the CCI group from information which would help us teach. Most CI are not interested in making policy but they do covet new teaching techniques which would help students learn more easily. Like Bob I think the CI's are intelligent enough to make decisions which will improve their teaching. I feel the best preparation I got was teaching with a Master in a clinic with a very structured environment.  This teaching was done after I attended the clinic twice as a student.

I think this question would better be stated as: How should a CCI Candidate prepare? That is what I think the MCI's are answering with most of their answers so far.  Another good question for the Masters is how do you help a candidate prepare ? This would be good for we CCI's who are on the journey, to the Masters, to know when we teach.

I feel the statement which caused my concern may not be complete yet it sounds that the master wants to approve all material we receive which might help us improve our teaching. If this is the case I question if the masters program is set to be a teaching program or a filter system on what is taught.  When we all learn to remove our egos from Fly Casting and enjoy the pleasure of teaching another human something that brings such joy to ourselves we will be true teachers.

The above statements are my opinions and not intended to hurt or damage any one.

    [GH]  Jim,

In all my years, I have never gained the impression that there is intent by Masters to filter what is taught to CCI's or to purposely limit information they seek.

    [GH]  From Ted Warren:

Do any of the Masters or CCI's have good casting videos on U tube or their websites?  Could the FFF publish a list of these on it's website, in the Loop, or magazine?

If we want to promote more fly fishing, should the FFF put up (online) a good series of "learn to cast"  and "how to teach casting" videos on it's web site or on U tube?  This might produce a lot more dissemination of good info around the world than anything that is being done now (books, DVD, forums, or meetings)!  And the cost would be very low if MCI's & CCI's volunteer to produce the videos.  (These do not have to be Hollywood quality.)

I'm sure this is far fetched since we seem to struggle with getting agreement on basic definitions, what the requirements of the tests really mean, and the expectations of the examiners appear to vary significantly.  Maybe we spend too much time on the minutia and are missing a great opportunity and we old guys really are old school.

I would volunteer to work on such a project but not if 50 people, who meet once a year, have to agree on every word.

    [GH]  Ted,

    Good suggestions.

In the past, I have included a few casting videos when appropriate to the topics we have covered.

Of course, there are many more out there.  In some instances, I have had to gain permission to share them.

The CCI Testing Committee has revised both the written and the casting portions of the exam with the specific objectives of :

    1.  Making the wording of the questions and tasks as clear as possible to all including those who do not have English as their primary language.  The experiences of the International Committee have helped a great deal.

    2.  Including carefully worded EXPECTATIONS following each task description.

    3.  Having a more objective grading system.

The MCI Testing Committee has done the same with the performance part of the Master exam.  They have agreed to come up with a video depicting the performance and layouts for most of the tasks.  This is a project for the future.

The work product of each Committee will be presented at the CBOG meeting next month.  Of course, this must meet with Board approval before being put into actual practice.

    [GH]  From Jim Laing :

    Hi Gordy,

I too am guilty of not sharing everything.  Also guilty of using really BIG crayons and small rubber coated spoons... most of the time.  Guy is correct, I think there should be a separate forum for MCI's when an occasional appropriate topic surfaces.  The master exam topic would have been appropriate for a private forum exclusive to master instructors.

I have just finished a decent book called "the Millennials" by Thom S. Rainer & Jess W. Rainer.  Its about connecting with Americas Largest Generation.  If you and the group are interested, I can forward a brief report.

Should warn you that it is religious based and there is not one mention of fly fishing or fly casting mechanics.  Its simply about understanding our youngest generation.

    [GH]   Jim,

I don't think Guy was trying in any way to slight CCI's .   Some of them he has trained have turned out to be among the best.

Perhaps a better understanding of our younger generations would help us with our long range plans to teach them fly casting and to eventually have them replace us.

With our Study Group messages, I try to stay away from issues that involve politics or religion for reasons that I think you can understand.

I will read the reference myself, however, and get back to you once I've done that.
