    Walter & Group....

    [GH]   From Bob Tabbert :

Gordy the younger group coming up will probably learn off U Tube, google &  from their own teaching experience. I am surprised that the  casting instructions on U Tube are not mentioned as a source of visual casting information.

Some of the previous discussions on CCI preparations surprised me,  it sounded like one or two  of your Masters are  puffed up with their important casting knowledge that should not be shared with the poor dumb CCIs, who  would not be able to understand the concepts or apply the knowledge  in their teaching. With over 1,200 CCis out there doing the majority of the grass roots teaching I am certain that there are several CCIs that would be able to keep up mentally with the majority of the 120 so  Masters.

Teaching casting is learned by teaching casting, either as a helper with a more experienced caster or a solo experience. I know several guides who can cast and teach casting  better that a lot of us,  they are not either Masters or CCIs.

    [GH]  Bob,

Some casting videos on U Tube are good teaching demonstrations.  Some are not.  Informed candidates will consider the source of each before coming to conclusions.  Candidates early on their preparation journey will need guidance.

CCI's, as you know, can vary a great deal from one another.  Some have practically no actual teaching experience and don't even try to teach except to help their clients on the stream.  As Gary Davison pointed out, they have other objectives and priorities which we should respect.  Others have years of teaching experience and while they have not formally taken an MCI exam are nonetheless very well informed and have successfully taught fly casting for years.

To think that "we FFF masters" should have a monopoly on teaching fly casting and understanding of fly casting principles and theories would be nothing more than false service to the ego!

Some of the very best fly casting teachers I know include Lefty Kreh, Ed Jaworowski, Flip Pallot, Paul Dixon, & Bob Popovics.  Having fished with each and taught with most of them I've learned a great deal from  them over the years.  None of them are active as "FFF certified instructors".  At times we have profited when they have taught at our FFF Conclaves as guest presenters.

I've also learned some highly specialized casting tricks and methods as well as things to add to my "bag of teaching tricks" from some experienced guides both here in the USA and in other countries where I've fished and taught.

These folks have exposed me to some casting concepts which are refreshingly different approaches to fly casting and fly fishing.

Our CICP International experiences have also exposed us to new ideas and methods.  This helps us avoid the mediocrity which is sometimes born of intellectual "inbreeding".  *
