    Walter & Group....

[GH]  In view of John Till's concern that some of the older books which we've been recommending as study material for both CCI and MCI candidates being out of print and hard to find,  I received this message from Jason Borger (My reference in red. ) :

[JB]  Gordy—I am aware of the MSG references (although I think that I am about 200+ messages behind in terms of overall reading at the moment...I just need a night to sit and read and get caught up). *

Presentation is currently a ways out in terms of a re-print of any kind (likely a second edition, not a re-print). The new 20-book series that my father has embarked on is, in essence, like Presentation spread across 1,000,000+ words. There are currently planned to be three casting books in that series, all back to back. They will be written by my father, not me, so will be his current take on casting. Those are planned for next year.

As far as Nature of Fly Casting goes, I am working through a second edition right now. This will be a fairly significant re-working of the text, as I would hope any modern, technical fly-casting book 10 years down the line would see. I no longer even use some of the terminology from the first edition in teaching or writing (some of it has been replaced with terms that I think are better/more common, more properly descriptive and/or more mentally approachable). The modular idea remains, of course, but I don't think that a single page of the book will remain untouched. MUCH has happened in casting in the last 10 years, including *significant* technological advances in the study of casting. A fair amount has also changed in the way I personally teach and describe casts (or at least certain casts and parts of casts). There is much more on top of that, as well, and the book will really be a "version 2.0," not just some typo fixes and a new cover. I am going to try for Christmas 2011. We'll see if I make it.

I have seen both Presentation and NOFC going for absurd prices on eBay/Amazon ($500+). I hope that no one on the MSG has felt compelled to purchase a copy at those prices (I/we have nothing to do with that, those are copies outside our control). One could buy all 20 books in the new series (with 3 devoted to casting) for less than that. I hope that the market will see prices come down until the new books can be released.

If you want to send this this email out to the MSG verbatim, go ahead and do so. Saves you re-typing/re-wording.

[GH]  As most of you know, we've been hoping that Bruce Richards will be able to to come up with a new book on fly lines ..... or that there may be a way of having the present one re-printed.

As our flycasting books get older and more difficult to find or become too expensive, we must have our candidates rely on other means of learning.  This can take many forms including THE LOOP, and the seeking of direct instruction by Masters who teach, coach and mentor.

Participation in study groups such as the present CCI group hosted by Jim Bass and Gary Davison will help many who take advantage of it.

I predict that the Internet will become an increasingly reliable tool for gaining information as the years progress.

Attendance at conclaves and other FFF venues where courses and workshops are held is a great way to help train our budding CCI's.

There are and will continue to be limitations to some of these ways of learning .... not all can afford to travel to the FFF venues.  Some are not computer savvy; mentors are not available in many areas, etc. etc.....
