    Walter & Group...

    [GH]  From Don Pendleton :

    Gordy,
You comment that you think this is basic CI testing task.  I've always wondered why the MC test on the haul didn't ask the candidate to demonstrate with the non-dominate hand.

    [GH]  Don,

Most casters are not ambidextrous.  Of course, there are exceptions.  Tom White was one of them.  He was the first to actually take the Masters exam when the CICP was formed.  About a year prior to his death, he asked me to test him on the entire casting portion of the MCI exam... casting with his "other" arm.  He completed each and every task perfectly.

Tom also did trick casting demonstrations at fly shows. One of them was casting with 4 fly rods in each hand.  He'd do it with both simultaneous and alternating casting strokes. ( He was not only ambidextrous, but had very large hands. )

When I began to teach myself to cast with my non-dominant hand, I found that the haul was the most difficult thing for me to master.  Many others have told me the same thing.

In thinking about that, I suppose that is because the caster is being asked to train each hand/arm for an unaccustomed task at one and the same time.

Since there are wide variations on caster's abilities to switch hands, perhaps it would not be the best idea to force the issue on an exam.

Counterpoint to that thought is the fact that when a right handed instructor is teaching a left handed student to haul (and vice versa) it would be a great advantage to have him able to do it with each hand.
