I am the sacrificial lamb! After reading your hauling suggestion I went outside and instead of using my customary short haul beginning with the power stroke, I started the haul (per your directions) at the loading phase.
As a note: Working with students having difficulty with tailing loops when learning to haul, I demonstrate an inappropriate haul resulting in a tailing loop. We then work on ensuring that the student’s haul more closely mirrors the power stroke and the tailing loop in most cases is eliminated. I feel good and secure that my instruction works and move on: Perhaps a little too good.
About an hour ago, I found using a longer haul mirroring my overall acceleration resulted in tighter loops, increased line speed and less sloppy longer casts. The loops “appeared” to be symmetrical and a light 5 mph breeze did not affect the leader straightening at the end of the cast.
Your exercise, revealed three things to me: 1) A need for someone on a regular basis to review my casting strokes until I am no longer able to cast, 2) that either my short haul technique, while not causing tailing loops and seeming to be effective my overall cast, is not completely in synch with my power stroke or 3) and somewhere in my stroke is slack which the longer haul eliminates (doesn't mean that I don't have to find out what is causing the slack and need to eliminate it!).
I don't know if my comments was the object of your suggestion, but at a personal level it sure improved my overall cast and emphasizes that a discussion of tailing loops without including power and SLP does not do the issue justice. Like most things in casting, it’s not that simple.

Hints :
1. If I started with a haul and then added my stroke I got a very different result that if I started my stroke and then made a brief early haul.
2, Don't guess. Go out and do it.
