Walter & Group....
[GH] Gary Eaton has sent a very detailed message containing his thoughts on changes which might be considered in the future for the MCI exam.
Because of its detail and length, I've saved it in my files and have placed it in an attachment.
I'll point out that many of the things he has suggested have been considered by the MCI Testing Committee along with the possible shift of some of the MCI exam tasks to the CCI exam. Along with this, of course, there would be ongoing cooperation between both MCI and CCI Testing Committees.

[GH] From Bernd Ziesche :
Hello Gordy,
many thanks for all your kind work on this huge topic!!! We all learned something for sure.
We now discussed about what the candidates have to show in a Master exam.
What do we expect on the examiner's side to show?
I was thinking about a small sheet/card/flyer for examiners which every examiner might/should have a look on short before he starts to "work".
Might that be a good thing to have?
Something like the very basic root...
All my best
Bernd

[GH] Bernd,
Examiners now have the detailed MCI Exam Protocol as well as the Candidate's Bill of Rights and are expected to review these documents periodically to remain familiar with the details. Examiners are expected to conduct themselves in accordance with these.
The documents are subject to periodic review.
These are available on the FFF Website.

[GH] From Jim Bass :
[JB] Hi Gordy,
Al had us teach fighting and landing the fish along with hook set for many types of fish. I am not sure this could be incorporated into the test but it might give you some ideas.
I may be confused but if we want to incorporate teaching the PULD cast don't you think the CCI should have that requirement so they can teach the beginners. If you are a teaching CCI, you would (should) teach this in my opinion. If you have passed the CCI with this task why would we want to test you again? Just a thought.
Best Jim

[GH] Jim,
This, I think, would prolong the casting portion of the exam. It would have to cover many different fishing circumstances and fish species as well.
For that reason, it is usually covered during the oral portion of the exam under one of the 5 topics ... FISHING.
You are not at all confused on the Pick-Up-and-Lay-down issue.
The PULD might well be placed into the CCI rather than the MCI exam. There are pros and cons to that decision based partly on the complexity of how it is taught and evaluated. A decision to be left to the two testing committees.
I'm hoping that Paul Arden will share information on this subject with us. This was discussed in the SexyLoops forum in detail.

[GH] Roy Sedge comes in with comments on the PULD in line with Jim's message :
Dear Gordy:
Regarding the PU&LD as a potential test item:
As we know the initial step for taking the MCI examination is to possess CI certification. It is a base level. Taking this a step further, if the CI is a base level for instructor certification, and if the PU&LD cast is a base casting sequence taught by instructors, shouldn't it be part of the CI examination?
It seems out of synch suggesting the PU&LD cast as a test item for the MCI but not for the CI. Any person possessing the CI should at minimum have the ability to effectively teach a most basic casting sequence.
If this is a legitimate concern, perhaps the PU&LD issue should considered as a test item under "Instructor Abilities" on the CI certification examination.
My comments relate to the timing of the question, not its validity. As an MCI candidate, if asked to demonstrate and teach the PU&LD cast, I would not think of the question coming from left field. Effectively teaching the PU&LD casting sequence is probably one of the most essential elements that all instructors must possess. Those giving the MCI examination always have the prerogative to ask such questions.

[GH] A professional teacher speaks. This from Clarence Button :
Good day, Dr. Hill:
I very much appreciate having the opportunity to participate in this Study
Group and receive the diverse wisdom of you and your colleagues.
At my level of advancement, the discussions sometimes left me with
questions which have turned into quests....but at least I have the
questions.
I confess to not having adequately digested some of the discussions in
this a very busy time of year for me. However, as a teacher, summertime
is a time of reflection and professional/personal development, so I will
be treating the discussions in depth through the next couple of months.
Many thanks for including me. It REALLY helped. If the discussions
continue, I'd be very grateful if I could as well.
It seems you must be like me in devoting a huge amount of time to
volunteer type activities. Your efforts in the Study Group do seem
superhuman !!:<)
Kind regards
Clar E. Button
