    Walter & Group...

    [GH]  From Paul Arden :

I think that the PULD should be in both exams. I also think that every effort should be taken to ensure that they are performed over water. I don't like the way that the tests are structured, i.e. show stuff first, teach stuff at the end. The entire exam should be teaching orientated and both exams should arguably start with a PULD. I would expect a MCI candidate to be able to pick up more line cleanly, throw tighter back loops, be able to vary trajectory and offer a variety of different pickups.

I have seen candidates pass the CI test who cannot make a smooth PULD cast. Wouldn't it be a better start to a MCI test to say "teach me the PULD at various distances" instead of "show me some narrow loops"? Let's get right in there at the start and give the candidate an opportunity to find his feet.

    Cheers, Paul

(notes will follow! Been fishing today -Had 12lb tippet bitten clean off in freshwater!)

    [GH]  Paul,

I knew you felt that way about the PULD.  We'll be interested in your followup notes.

Years ago, I recall that the MCI casting exam did have a task which entailed a pickup from 40' or 45' and delivery to 60' as a PULD.  I don't know why it was eliminated.

I use this technique when fishing from my skiff while working a mangrove shoreline.  The presentation is made close to or under mangrove overhangs.  A short retrieve is made with the fly in the likely "strike zone".  Then a pickup is made at about 40' and followed by a "lay-down" cast back to the strike zone with no false casting.

No plug or spin fisher can compete with the time the lure/plug spends its time in the "pay dirt" area because they must take the time to reel in most of the line before making the next cast....  Same problem with the fly fisher who strips his fly in close to the skiff and then makes several false casts to place it back into the strike zone.

Years ago, I was fishing in the Andes foothills of Northern Peru.  We found some fish which looked a lot like trout... but they had sharp teeth.  Had to resort to a short wire "bite tippet".  The natives called them, "Damas".

Dave Sylvester caught a large piraña  on a streamer in the Amazonas .....Flood conditions with the water and fish in the jungle way back from the river.    Talk about teeth !!

[GH]  A generous offer from Mark Milkovitch !  (Highlights are mine)

    Gordy,
Thank you for taking the last four months to so thoroughly review the exam tasks.  In addition to the content discussions, it was very interesting to see how different people organized their information on each of the topics.  I found it extremely helpful as a way to organize my own thoughts with respect to the volume of information I’ve reviewed over this last several years.  As I’m sure others have, I compiled each task discussion as a separate Word file and would be happy to make those available to anyone who suffers a hard drive crash  or otherwise would like the information.

Thank you Gordy for all the good work you’ve done for all of us.

    Mark

    [GH]  Mark,

Many thanks for your offer !

A couple of MCI candidates joined the Group after we started this MCI Task series.  They would be well advised to take you up on this thoughtful offer.
