    Walter & Group...

CONGRATULATIONS TO CKLING LING WHO PASSED HIS MASTER'S EXAM !

    Hi Gordy,
Without you and this study group's help, I wouldn't have passed my MCI 2 days ago. Thanks from the bottom of my heart.
I am with the PULD in the exam group.

    Cheers
    Ling

[GH]  Paul Arden weighs in on adding the PULD to the MCI exam.  He also has some serious concerns :

    Hi Gordy,
OK for the PULD task in the MCI exam I would start with this. It would be an explain and demonstrate task. I would also make all tasks potentially explain and demonstrate and would expect the candidate to be able to examine me on the subject, telling me why the task is present on the exam, the purpose of the exercise, the cast, the key points, the methods of teaching, and the faults and rectification. If they can't do this for every task they fail, we teach them and hopefully next time they pass. A MCI should be able to mentor and examine other MCIs. Period.

As a future examiner I would like to see how they would approach a problem with a candidate giving an incomplete answer and I think there should be an examination level. But anyway:

    PULD. What, Why, How, Faults.

I would expect this task to be administrated over water - in fact the entire exam should be administrated over water. Every cast should have a clean pick up, unless demonstrating a fault. Teach me the PULD. Explain lift and its purpose. Explain different lifts including shotgun, spiral/snake and dynamic/extended/flick(whatever you call it). Show me how to lift and travel into a horizontal loop. Tell me how to lift and make a high backcast, a low backcast. Talk to me about the "waterhaul". What is it? What is its purpose? Tell me rod loading and you fail. Show me it on both back and forward casts.

Difference between MCI and CI? Longer lift. Cleaner pickup. I want to see a long pickup with NO water disturbance.

Teach me the PULD with 2 yards of flyline. 5 yards. 8 yards. 12 yards. 18 yards. Tell me everything you know. Make a long pickup and shoot to 70 feet (100 ft - whatever).

MCI level? Absolutely. The fact that we've been talking about this for two years is very disappointing. We need to shake these examinations up because they are behind the times. We have CI candidates who know more and who are better, more-rounded casters than the BOG examiners administrating the MCI tests. That's no good IMO and is letting us down Internationally where we have properly prepped and experienced instructors. It's going to become a serious problem if not fixed quickly.

    Cheers, Paul
