Gordy,
As the CICP expands, it may be a good idea to start a column in the Loop with information dedicated to young instructors. Perhaps a short paragraph with a teaching advice.
We enjoy having a former student help us with our classes at the college. He is the only one over the years that has come to us and expressed an interest in the CCIP. With some hard work and guidance he passed (first time!) and is doing very well. He has managed to land a full time job is at a local fly shop, where he sees on average 20 people a week for casting instruction!
I've attached a recent correspondence - and have changed names. Some of the content is exaggerated to reinforce a point...

[GH] From Jim Valle :
Gordy and Group,
Very much in line with the teaching experience topic, the Continuing Certification Committee recommended and the Board approved the concept of continually certifying our instructors at regional opportunities, these gatherings will not only keep instructors current but will offer the opportunity to teach, mentor and be mentored. I am attending Dave Rothrock’s Rendezvous in Pa this weekend and this will be exactly all of the above. Phil Gay will attend, he and Floyd Franke started this years ago.
Please be part of the Voluntary Solution and contact a Governor or Master in your region of the Country and put a casting day together invite everyone … encourage new FFF members, all of this will gain Continuing Certification Points to keep you current. And you will have a good time.
And when you tech or learn get a signature date time etc and keep track of it … that’s you record keeping to maintain your certification … Also I should note the program is retro-active to Jan 1 2010, so check your calendars and note your teaching activities….
One note all of us in the group are probably the most current … and we all know instructors that are simply not keeping current… please include these people in any activity you plan it only takes a little breeze to rekindle a fire….
Look forward to hearing about your gatherings,
~ Jim Valle ~

[GH] Dennis Grant reminds us of a motion made, seconded and passed by the BOG back in 2005 on teaching experience by Master Candidates (This does NOT apply to CCI candidates) :
MINUTES FOR TUESDAY, AUGUST 8, 2005
Board of Governors · Casting Instructor Certification Program
Federation of Fly Fishers
Park High School · Livingston · Montana
Tom Jindra · Chair
Phil Gay · Acting Secretary
MASTER TEST REVISIONS: BOG chair Jindra reported on behalf of committee chair Dusty Sprague. Jindra said reviewing the test standards had proven more time-consuming than anticipated and, rather than rush the project to completion, the committee was authorized to continue for another year. Assuming the review is completed before next year’s board meeting, Jindra said he will instruct Sprague to submit the report for review by the Executive Committee. Options available to the Executive Committee are: a) Exercise its authority to approve the report on behalf of the full board; b) Submit the report for email approval by the full board; or c) Hold the report for a full presentation at the board’s 2006 annual meeting.
Motion to consider a requirement for Master candidates to show proof of teaching experience before he can be accepted for examination. Jindra said he will deliver the assignment to the Master Test Study Guide Committee.
Motion by: Dennis Grant
Second: Gordy Hill
The motion was approved.
Just for the record !!
All the best, Dennis

[GH] From Dan Storaska :
Gordy,
My 2 cents on the topic of teaching experience required for the CCI. I remember several years ago when I scheduled my CCI examination with Floyd Franke as the examiner several weeks before the testing date, he requested that I bring my lesson plan for casting instruction for review. I was taken by surprise as I had not prepared any such documentation (nor could I find any reference to it in the CCI prep material at the time which added to my anxiety!). I don't believe that this is a requirement, but I think that this was his way of analyzing how the candidate approached the teaching elements of the CCI examination.
Most of my instructional experience at the time involved volunteer work 'teaching' friends, neighbors, members of my fishing club and interested students at local schools and cub scout packs, but I had not followed any sort of 'script'. I am fortunate in that my wife is an educator. In preparation for the exam, I sat down with her and put together a lesson plan based upon my earlier 'classes'. It was terrific preparation for the teaching aspect of the exam and actually, Floyd was very interested in the lesson plan and we spent quite a bit of time discussing it. I think that might be a very good addition to the current CCI (and perhaps even MCI) examination.
This wasn't just a 'one and done' aspect of the examination. I am very happy I was 'forced' to put it together. I have used and continued to modify the plan since the examination and it is a great tool to keep me on track. I review it before most lessons I give and I continue to make modifications thereafter based upon things I've learned from the class. I usually give an outline version of it to my students as a syllabus when they arrive for a lesson or I print several copies for a larger class to hand out. It becomes a great reference for them as they understand the material to be covered and instructors expectations.
