Answers to our haul questions continue to come in :
>From Peter Minnick :
Gordy...Welcome to Mac World ....expect your life to take a quantum leap forward...
With the haul..especially with new students I tread very softly focusing on demo, the big picture and feel. It's a self discovery process and the horizontal grass exercise is the best place to find it. 30 ' of line...back cast...down/up...forward cast... down/up... back and forth putting it together and eventually off the grass to off vertical.
The biggest danger is "paralysis through analysis" when the student is thinking of too many things and trying to put it all together..For newbies mastering the haul can be really daunting so you want to keep the anxiety, teaching and verbalization to a minimum [KISS] For more experienced casters that need tweaking with the timing walk the talk and bring them up to speed... [GH] Peter,
Sometimes simplicity works best. I know I have been guilty of making things more complicated than they need be as I teach !

In line with this discussion, Tony Loader comes in with a workable simplistic approach :
Hi Gordy,
I've had some success by false casting in synch with the student while standing close beside.
They can see (peripherally) and hear what I'm doing when I commence hauling and some have rapidly learned to imitate it.
Regards,
Tony.

[GH] Tony. Some folks learn best by imitating their instructor.

From Allan Dozier :
I agree the haul on the forward cast is harder for everyone to learn. I have found when teaching the double haul and the student is doing fine on the backcast but is having trouble on the forward cast I try to emphasize pulling back and down on the haul on the forward.
It seems to make the student feel the hands are separating more like on the backcast haul. It also seems to make them delay the forward haul somewhat because if they start it too soon the line drags across their chest.
I also try to get them to push with each of their thumbs at the same time as they rotate the wrists. It easier for them to have each hand do something at the same time and makes it easier to apply the maximum force with the line hand at the same time the rod hand is applying maximum rotation speed.

[GH] I was about to send a little quiz on the mechanics of the haul as related to the casting stroke, when this message came in from Louis Bruno. (He must have ESP).
His question is a good one ! Let's have some of you give your opinions on this :
Gordy,
After reading the answers on your hauling question I concluded that there are several viewpoints on when to start the haul.
Are there any advantages or disadvantages if we start the haul and continue to haul throughout the length of the stroke (forward or backward) or time our haul to coincide with our application of power (power snap)?
