  • Effective Rod Length, More / Question on Lefty's thumb position

    Walter & Group...

Walter Simberski tries to put things in perspective as he reviews Don Phillips' book and makes in interesting suggestion :

    Hi Gordy,

I think we are talking about two different things with the term effective rod length. Phillips chose the
term as a means of comparing two rods, i.e. everything else being equal why does one rod cast
    farther than the next?

We've been using it to explain a phenomenon that occurs when casting,
i.e. in order to maintain slp of the rod tip given a circular casting motion the effective length of the
rod needs to change constantly throughout the cast.

While I like the term "effective rod length" to describe the dynamic nature of the rod during casting,
Phillips was ahead of us in using the term for a different purpose. I suggest we find another term for
the phenomenon that allows us to follow slp - something along the lines of effective chord length or
    dynamic rod length.

    Cheers

    Walter

                                                      GRIP ... THUMB POSITION

    Question from Lou Bruno :

    Gordy,

In Lefty?s book, Ultimate Guide To Fly Fishing, he explains where he likes to place his thumb while performing his side cast, page 298, second paragraph (middle of the page), ?The thumb will be on top of the rod handle.?  I assume he means the reel is on the bottom therefore, you place the thumb opposite the reel.

But, if you look at the drawing towards the bottom on page 299, his thumb does not appear to be on top.

To me his thumb position appears to be rotated towards the side of the handle.

Can I make the assumption that perhaps this is just a poor illustration?

Lou...    Nice catch.  I missed that.

My take is that the artist is responsible .... call it "artist's license".

I may be wrong, however ....  especially since it appears in this drawing that the thumb IS "on top" if we relate it to the horizon.

    Let's ask Lefty.
