An advanced (and enhanced) haul technique demonstrated by Bruce Richards and sent along with an attachment by Bob Tabbert:
Gordy, your string of hauling info cause me to dig out some info that you might find interesting. The famous german caster, Gerd Fe...sp? gave a demo at an FFF national meeting in which he demoed hauling in an elliptical, almost circular motion to take advantage of obtaining a better angle on the stripping/pulley guide..it requires better timing..does it work? You probably already have thought & tried that one!
The next one is probably more interesting...Bruce Richard taught me this technique at one of his advanced casting clinics held up in Michigan at Ray Schmidt's lodge..please refer to the attachment, an article I wrote for the SC's Long Cast newsletter.
You must push ahead with a 'book' containing the "Best From Gordy" Your legacy on the teaching & understanding of casting demands a literature documentation.

KUDOS to you for bringing this up. I had referred to a similar technique on this forum about 6 or 7 years ago.
The name you seek is Gunther Feuerstein of Austria who demonstrated this to us at an International Conclave at Idaho Falls August 6th, 2003. He and Charles Jardine (UK) went "toe to toe" challenging one another on advanced casting techniques from Europe and the UK. Informative, spicy and entertaining .
I have used this technique for years. Others have done so as well ...... though it hasn't been popularized. (Sort of a little "secret ingredient" .... like the woman who wins the pie contest at the State Fair each year and gives out her recipe ..... leaving out one ingredient ! )
Simply put, the latter portion of the haul is made with a twist of the wrist done to rotate the thumb over which the line is draped. This line hand wrist twist adds acceleration greater than that which can be achieved by line hand linear motion alone.
Way back in the 40's my grandfather, who used to attend the competitions, told me about a "haul tool". This was a grooved waxed stick several inches in length. It was held in the line hand and the line passed through the groove at its end. The caster would rotate this stick rapidly during the haul to vastly increase the speed of the line just before its release on the shoot of the presentation cast. It must have taken lots of practice to use properly. Of course it was quickly outlawed for competition casting. However, it used the same principle of rotation for maximum acceleration.
The use of the thumb, being part of the caster's anatomy, is "legal". Rotating the arm as this is done, can increase acceleration even more.
Without any data, I'm none the less confident that Bruce Richards' and Noel Perkins' new HA (Haul Analyzer) will demonstrate that this method can yield smooth, constant acceleration of the fly line as a mirror image of that achieved by efficient movement of the fly rod.
Re your final comment: Some day we will have all this material current and from years back with regular informed updates and editing available along with lots more on our own FFF WIKI. Each of us will be able to participate. The wheels have already begun to turn. I won't need to write a book...... With the dizzying pace of information gathering at present, text books are outdated by the time they hit the shelves. A well managed WIKI, can be a work in progress and at the same time an ultimate reference.
This achievement will be OURS, not mine.
