    Walter & Group....

    Here is another way of looking at DRAG .... a description by Al Crise:

    Howdy Gordy
     I was watching some casting both video and live over the last few weeks.
      As we have been on this Drag thing Here is my thoughts:
            Drag = the movement toward the casting direction with little force just getting connected.
       The Better the Back Cast the Less the Drag is needed.
           Thinking of Steve Rajeff. His is as Straight as can be made. requiring little drag.
                  Any off line Tracking; up down or sideways off of the SLP at 180 requires some drag to 'Fix' the problem.
                 Think of a strong wind behind you. Drag sure helps.

    Al...   Well, some elite distance competition casters use it to advantage even when that have flawless or nearly flawless back casts................

    From Lou Bruno:

    Gordy,

    So a caster can CREEP before the line fully extends during the back cast and after the line fully extends?

    Lou

     ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~`
    Lou...   Yes, indeed ..
    One of my working definitions for CREEP (Not an official one) was :
    CREEP: MINIMALLY ACCELERATED, SLOW MOVEMENT OF THE FLY ROD IN THE DIRECTION OF THE stroke length and rod arc.CAST AND OPPOSITE THAT OF AN UNROLLING OR NEWLY UNROLLED LOOP WHICH SHORTENS AVAILABLE ROD ARC.
    Our official one will almost certainly be much shorter.  At this time I see this "definition" of mine as being more of a description.  It is just too long & too wordy to be a good crisp definition.
    I look at DRIFT as movement of the rod in the direction of an unrolling loop after the cast which increases available
    I call it drift when false casting with respect to both forward and back casts.
    FOLLOWTHROUGH is a term I've reserved for movement of the rod in the direction of an unrolling loop on the delivery cast.
    Let me be clear.  None of these descriptions are official definitions and will certainly be worded differently by the Glossary Committee before we are finished.
    From Tom Scheer:
    Gordy
    I hope this finds you well and chasing poons.
    As a midwesterner who suffers from heat and searches for cool places, I will likely be doing very little salt water fishing. However, as a masters wannabee, I need to have some knowledge of that fishery. Would your seminar in Loveland with Jim Valle and Lefty Kreh be a good way to gain some of that knowledge?
    regards, and Thanks for all the thought provoking questions and information your study group delivers.
                                                       Casting and fishing in the Salt
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Tom....   That is the whole idea of the workshop.   Basic information with tips and tactics to help fly fishermen who may someday (or soon) wish to take a trip to fish the salt.

    All too often, the fly fisherman spends valuable time and money to go on a salty fly fishing trip only to find he or she is woefully unprepared for the fishing conditions and tasks at hand.  Even the best guides can't substitute for the knowledge and skills needed in this very different venue.

    Sometimes the fisherman spends his time with a guide learning the needed skills and techniques and just starts to be effective when the time to go back home arrives.  Much better to be prepared well in advance !
