    Walter & Group...

    From Les Rosenthal and Chase Jablonski on the distance "170 Cast"     G.

    Les had sent these links to me with Chase's permission.  Chase had provided them.  Les mentioned that he had injured his back while performing them.  I highlighted in bold italics, a suggestion for a Group response     G :

    Hi Gordy, Les,

    Feel free. The cast goes by few names, been around for a long time with many variations. What's most interesting to me is the haul timing. A couple other casters do the same. I'll leave the group to try and figure out why, then I can try putting in my two cents if you like.

    Here's the original video. Goes by too quick to see anything, which is why I made the gifs.

    Sorry you hurt your back, Les. :( I hurt my back several times when I first tried it too. Gave up on it for a while. Had to learn to turn without using my back muscles toward the cast ). Putting your casting foot backwards minimizes the amount of twist needed.

    See you in Loveland this year, Gordy?

    Cheers,

    Chase

    Below are links to the back cast of the 170 cast.  It's a cast with a 170 degree casting arc.

    Let's have some of you critique this cast.

                                                                TECHNICAL STUFF

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Les Rosenthal had pointed out in one of his messages, that some of our material was technical.  Here is my answer to him:
    Les...
    Your comment, "I'm studying diligently but find many of your discussions a bit technical " deserves a separate reply.
    Our Study Group deliberations often go a good measure beyond what is needed as direct as well as background information to pass the MCCI exam.  Much more importantly, to help us be the best informed Masters we can be ... test or no test !
    The last thing we intended was to present a list of answers to questions likely to come up on either the oral or the practical part of the test.
    Last year, we did take the sample questions from the Master Study Guide and come up with answers .... but these were only sample questions.  We offered a range of answers from members of the Group along with my comments.
    This way, we avoid "teaching to the test" which I think is not a good way to do it... rather I intend to have us teach one another as we literally exhaust certain topics many of which have little chance of actually appearing on an exam.
    As I do this, my "reward" is that I learn mountains of information from you... our members !  An additional one is the satisfaction I get from seeing so many of you candidates take the exams with confidence and pass.
    Having Master candidates answer questions with a SHORT ANSWER backed up by a more detailed one I think is great training for them as they prepare for their orals.
    PS:  Note that our Group messages teach by TOPIC .  One of the study habits I find so effective for MCCI candidates is to do this with multiple references rather than simply reading each book all the way through.  I recommend taking each topic and looking it up in several books and other reference materials to gain the perspective and language of several different teachers and authors. The well informed Master will then come to his/her own conclusions.  This leads to much deeper understanding of fly casting and fly fishing.
    This way, when taking the exam you be asked a question the answer to which you don't have ....  no problem.  You can use the vast background information you have to think it through and come to a logical conclusion.
    You'll note that we sometimes digress with joking comments and sometimes chide one another.  This helps make it FUN !  An important ingredient as Lefty Kreh has pointed out many times.
    A great suggestion from Les :
    The challenge for me is working to understand fly casting concepts so completely I can describe them simply to a beginning student.  The idea that there is so much to learn only makes the challenge more involving and fun.
    I'm in this for much, much more than an MCI designation, it only helps me become a better caster, student and teacher.  The MCI is a roadhouse along the way travelled.
    At this time, discussions that instead of being more elaborate, simplified concepts would be more helpful to me.  Mel wrote in 'Simplicity', it occurs when everything extraneous was taken away.  If you have some filed that do that, please share them.  I file the email discussions into categories for later review.
    Right now, I'm studying Sheila Hassan's new Fly Casting a Systematic Approach and finding the simplified concepts I'm seeking.
    Thanks again for the help!
    Les
    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

    Les...   I don't do that often enough .   MIA CULPA !    Sometimes I have reduced long complicated messages to numerical lists of what I think is the "meat".  At other times, I've highlighted important passages in a detailed presentation.  The "short answer / long answer" method helps, too.

    At present, some of us are working on a detailed physics explanation of what really happens at the conclusion of the cast.  One of our physicists is writing the paper.  Another will put the concepts in lay language.  I'll try to follow up with a list of simplified common denominators.

    Bottom line is that I'll try to be better at this.

    Thanks,

    Gordy

                                                                           TESTING ETHICS

    ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
    Some of you have requested that I be an examiner on your MCCI exam team.
    I requested a ruling on that from the Ethics Committee of the CBOG.
    The Committee ruled that I should not be an examiner for any member of our Group unless that member has ceased to be in the Group for a minimum period of 6 months.
