    Walter & Group........

    On teaching from Liam Duffy:-

    Hi Gordy,
Been away for a few days so I'm jumping into the subject without being fully conversant with all relevant emails.
However (that always sounds bad) I learned many years ago to NEVER,EVER use a negative term with a student (Wrong!, No, that's not correct, etc, etc, etc) I have always found that encouragement is the key such as : that's excellent, lets just polish it up so that it looks better to onlookers, Very good, now for EVEN more distance try and (move the hand more, tighten the wrist a little, relax don't be tense etc) and when the student gets it right heap on the praise!!

We have an old saying in Ireland (actually we have 1,000s) which in Irish is (phonetically) Mull an oige agus toicead siad. Translation:"Praise the young and they will come to you"
in other words "one word of praise is worth more than a thousand negative words/comments" regardless of the student's age.

    Best Regards,
    Liam Duffy

    From Scott Swartz:-

Telling the student what he's doing wrong  frequently does not work.  Why is that?

The most obvious answer is... You must also tell the student what to do right, not just what is wrong...
but assuming the student was instructed well and duplicated with the instructor as to the task at hand then my answer is...

The student perceives that he is already doing what you ask. (Using wristing for example: our students who see a video of their casting and see the rod tip drop down in the back cast are astonished and will often tell us they would not believe it if they did not see it for themselves and would have sworn they were stopping the rod  and NOT dropping it).

    Scott ,     I agree.   Also................

This is one important value of video teaching technique.

Al Crise answer to David Diaz' question:

    Howdy Gordy and Gang
There is of course the instructor STEP the says THAT IS WRONG. It has to be followed with what is Right and How to do it Right. All praise is great for the students ego. IF they are twisting the wrist call it up and get it stopped before becomes habit. It can be done nicely most of the time but you will get that one in the bunch that need the truth in short order. Allways leave on a positive note.
