  • Duncan Loop v. Uni loop

    Walter & Group.........

Here is something I just learned from Laurence Baggett :-

    Gordy: (My take...)

The difference between the two knots, and I think a major difference, is the Duncan "loop" is around the standing part of the line and the uniknot "loop" is around the tag end. The result should be the Duncan loop will break sooner similar to an overhand knot in the standing part. That knot for the little time I've been around has been credited to Norm Duncan and was used instead of a Homer Rode loop knot. Headed for Costa Rica this weekend. I'll give you an update when I get back. Regards

    Laurence ....

You have just taught me something about the Duncan loop / Uni-loop that I had never considered.

Before posting your message, I did as Lefty advises and tied up 10 of these with the knot tied around the standing part on one end and the same knot tied around the tag end on the other ...... then tested them to see which would break first.

You were correct in that what you have called the, "Duncan loop"  (tied around the standing part) slipped down and broke every time while the, "Uni-knot loop" (tied around the tag end) neither slipped down nor broke !!!!!!!

I only challenge your loop names ...... simply because I don't really know.  Both are exactly the same except for which end one uses.

Tying around the tag end means that you have to leave a loooooooooooonnnnnnggggg tag end which will then serve as the leader segment after you finish the knot and cut off the excess, "standing part".   In essence, then, this makes the tag end become the standing part and the standing part the tag end !!!

A conundrum, paradox or frank sex change !

This was a mystery to me until I tied them up, tested them, and slept on it.

Now I have been charged with the onerous task of having to go out and fish with these so I can see how they behave whilst fighting a fish.  Tough work ...... but somebody has to do it.

Mack ..... see what you have done ?
