  • Line choice for both Spey and straight line casting

    Walter & Group.........

    Repeating Liam Duffy's question:

    Hi Gordy,
Question for the group: a student comes to you with the following question " I want to fish with an 8 wt. line which I can use with my single handed rod and my double handed rod which I use for spey casting, can you tell me the most what line to buy"
    Best Regards,
    Liam Duffy, MCI. THCI

Rick Whorwood (THCI) replies with one answer to Liam Duffy's question as to a line which can be used with a Spey rod for Spey casting and, also, for straight line single handed casting :-

    Hi Gordy
A double taper ?, or possibly a shooting head, used in reverse (for the spey rod). The reverse head would work for Skagit Casting (the short front taper would turn over the sink tips), put on the right way would give a great distance line.

Another suggestion from Jim Laing :-

    Gordy,

A guide up in Michigan turned me onto the Winston B2x 11' #7 last fall.  We chucked lead all week and dredged out the deep holes for steelhead with a level shooting line/ "chuck & duck" rig.  I called Twin Bridges after returning and talked with one of the factory guys that use this same rod with a long belly #8 line for spey casting.  I believe he mentioned he uses the SA XXD or ED.

Will have to line up my 14' 8/9 with a #12 tarpon line and give that a shot!

    From Pat Blackwell :-

    Hi Gordy,

We know neither the recommended line weight of the single handed rod nor the double handed rod only the weight of the line the student wishes to purchase. If both rods are rated for an 8wt. line, a DT8F in the 100' range or a shooting head of approximately 360 grains @ 40' (Two-Handed Fly Casting, Al Buhr page 60). I've fished both rods with a DT8, finding that line weight light when casting short, and just ok on longer cast. From my own limited experience I would recommend a shooting head for a student that wanted to purchase only one line.

    From Walter Simberski :-

Is the single handed rod going to be used primarily for spey casting? Is there a line weight rating for the two handed rod? Does the caster prefer Skagit, Scandinavian or classical spey casting style? Do they want a sinking or floating line? How long is the dh rod?

Depending on the answers you could be looking at a shooting taper, short belly to long belly wf, a dt, or a multitip line. Recommendations for front and rear tapers could be impacted as well.

Knowing the intended environment could make life a bit easier. If fishing the Bow River for example could try 7 weight XXD floating line. This NOT an absolute - just a possible starting point and I am guessing that the dh rod is a 11-12 foot long 6 weight.

    Cheers

    Walter

    From David Olsen:-

    Gordy ,

Assuming that both are 8 wt. rods , a longer bellied weight forward such as an Expert Distance from SA or maybe a Wulff Triangle Taper Steelhead line would do fairly well on both , particularly if the person is a fairly aggressive speycaster . Another option would be a short spey line like a Windcutter 6/7/8 , which is a bit heavy for the single hander , but not by a bunch .

    Thanks ,
    David

    Walter & Pat....

Liam didn't specify the rod designations or lengths.  I made the assumption that each would be rated as an, "8" wt.   Of course, an 8 wt. line for single handed straight line casting would be different than an 8 wt. Spey line.

My thought (and I have not tried it) would be to use a short head Spey line for both.  In order to get all that onto a reel likely to be used for single handed straight line casting, however, one might have to cut off the last 20' of the running line.

Another choice to consider would be David Olsen's suggestion of the SA Expert Distance line.

The shooting head might work, too, for some circumstances.

I DID try his second suggestion ( the Wulff Triangle Taper..... not the Steelhead line, but the Bermuda Triangle one) size 8 on both my 8 wt. single handed rod and my 14' traditional 7 - 8 wt. Spey rod and was able to perform adequately with each.

Many possible choices.  Trick is come up with the one which works best.

Since I'm not a THCI nor Spey experienced caster, I'll defer to those who are.

You will likely remember the messages we had about teaching autistic people several months ago.  To illustrate if not emphasize the fact that many of these folks are brilliant in their own, "worlds", I've included this link :-

We've all read about cases of autistic savants;  they have an amazingly advanced skill and don't function in the real world as we know it. We are familiar with musical and mathematical savants. This young autistic man, Stephen, has a different and remarkable gift that would be hard to believe if you didn't see it here. Mind-boggling.  Talk about learning by SEEING !!!!!!
