From Al Crise on line handling:-

When Teaching shooting line
I tell them that there is a switch in the line hand. The thumb is holding the
line to the Second pad of the index finger. This is the "closed switch". Moving
the thumb to the end of the finger is the open switch. This lets the line flow
out of the hand. Open the switch only after the STOP.
On holding the slack if wading or
working the edge of a pond or river where I am waking the coils are held in
loops in my line hand. I will strip in line making small coils when I get three
or four in my hand I drop a couple into a bigger loop. Trying to keep the
biggest loop last off my hand when I shoot the line. This way only the line I
need comes off my fingers.
Distance cast I still guide the
line with my line hand to stop the rod slap of the line at the end of the
cast.
I do use a small indoor/outdoor
rubber backed carpet to cast from if there is grass weeds or a slick deck. I
like the carpet better than the bucket to strip on to.
My first stripping basket was a
small plastic wash pan. I ty-wrapped to my wading belt.
I have used the belt tuck to keep
the line undercontrol when wading. Just sucking in my stomach would release the
line. Well it did when I was 30 pounds lighter....

Al.... Good stuff ! For those interested in
pictures and text on the use of the, "O" ring made by the thumb and forefinger
of the line hand during the presentation shoot, take a look at : Lefty Kreh's,
PRESENTATION, pp. 155 - 158.
