    Walter & Group.....

This message from Jim Valle (I believe I may have sent this out before when my computer was malfunctioning.  My apologies if this is a repeat to you.   Good advice, here, which I don't want to be missed by any of you.    Gordy

    Gordy and Group,

Just wanted to add a note to this subject of casting with the non–dominant hand.

First of all it’s easy if you just try (for basic casts, double hauls take a a bit of work).  I actually have my new casters casting with both hands within the first hour. If you simply focus on the essentials SLP, Stop etc. you will see and you will cast with less than half the effort because it is PURE Technique!

I tell my students just focus on the techniques I have shown them and see what happens. Take a Chance and open your mind. “Less Negativity! Just Try! The reason this works is the non-dominant hand has no bad habits, (muscle memory is 0),  I also have found this to be a great approach for myself when learning something new because you can work from the technical movement only and usually end up teaching your dominant hand a lesson.  (I encourage my students to learn from their non-dominant hand) I use this with all my students… new to advanced …and although the student always gives that “You have to be Kidding” look. I insist and it never fails to amaze them once they try. (With this success in their pocket they feel real achievement AND I as an instructor can verify they “Understand” the essentials….so I feel good too!! That one bit of confidence relaxes the student and vaults their learning curve forward. This exercise never fails to amaze and always ends with a smile.

Additionally, I have  found the ability to cast with either hand extremely useful in Project Healing Waters, Casting For Recovery, or working with  handicapped kids, and certainly all my “other hand students”. It also can help with windy day demonstrations or situations where your audience is forced to be on your non casting  side, where you can’t cast the in the other direction ,  where it will be impossible to show them the movement of your casting hand and arm.

Bottom line I think each Master either before or after Certification would get there anyway.

    Great Casting,

    Jim
